Digging for Carrots

Hello Everyone!

This week we are looking at the garden so we had lots of activities to represent this theme.

On the sensory table we had lots of flower petals and colorful pasta to practise our scooping and pouring skills. E worked really hard to pick up pieces one by one with the scooper tweezers. L and A were enjoying imaginative play with Evita and they said to each other “hot hot hot!!” about the pasta. A scooped a big spoonful of pasta and gave it to Evita.

“What type of pasta is it?” asked Evita

“Cheese!” smiled A.

On the small table we were painting a piece of white paper brown, adding salt to give texture. N and S did such a good job of painting with brushes today with salt, it looks very realistic and soil like.

On the malleable table we had the green AND brown play dough with some flower toys. The brown represents soil and the green play, doh grass. I made a very long flower and showed it to his teachers with a proud smile on his face. L and T had fun rolling out play doh and sticking colorful flowers inside. R picked a flower and kept passing it to different people, so kind!

At the front of the room we had the light table shining. On top were lots of sparkling jars filled with fireflies. L enjoyed counting the fireflies with K. H liked putting the fireflies close to his eyes to see the colors on them!

At circle time Lucy said.

“Today Brandon isnt here.. Who is this?”

L said “what's your name?” and Evita replied with her name. Today we got to spend time with Evita in Buds class, we are so lucky!

Lucy showed us a carrot. “What color is it?”

“Orange” said I.

We pretended to be carrots and wiggled down into the soil and popped up to the song

“Pop goes the weasel” (pop goes the carrot)

Then it was time for the main event. Lucy showed us a brown piece of cardboard with lots of green ribbon sticking out. Everyone was so excited to see what it was.

“Welcome to my garden!” said lucy

“Carrot!” said L.

She tried to pull the carrot up out of the soil. And he succeeded! This activity helped us strengthen our muscles in our fingers and hands so we can get better at zippers and other fine motor activities. Everyone was super proud of themselves for pulling a carrot out of the soil. We counted them together. A and L helped Lucy to count. We then sang “ten little carrots” (ten little fingers carrot version) to round it off. We read a story about gardens. E was pointing at all the vegetables on the page.. Yummy!

We took all that gardening knowledge and we used our imagination to cook some yummy food by the kitchen. K and H were collecting potatoes in the frying pan! L and E were mixing drinks and sipping them with the tiny cups.

At the park today we went to the green area and were fascinated by all of the beautiful cherry blossoms floating down from the trees. At the park we were lucky enough to play with our petals friends! On the walk back we sang “i see something blue”  but when we sang “i see something orange” we were treated to a real orange cat in the window, we waved and said hello to the cat.

We hope you have a wonderful Thursday and we are looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Love, Buds
