Making Challah

March 17, 2025

Happy Monday! It’s the last week before Spring Break!

INTERNATIONAL MONTHS

S’s mom C visited our classroom today to share about Jewish culture! She told us about how they believe the world was created.

C:

Day 1: god created dark and light.

Day 2: god made the sky and water.

Day 3: God created everything that grows like trees and flowers.

Day 4: God made the sun and the moon and stars.

Day 5: God created everything that flies and the fish.

Day 6: God created animals and people.

Day 7: He rested.

The seventh day is called Shabbat. On shabbat everyone rests, and they eat bread and drink grape juice. C brought grape juice for us to drink, and bread dough for us to roll and braid into loaves of bread. We each had our own dough that we shaped and baked in the oven. We’ll bring it home tonight! It smelled so good while it was baking, we can’t wait to eat it!

QUESTION OF THE DAY

H: Do you know someone who is married?

Before we answer, what does married mean?

T: Merry Christmas!

C: One person and one person be together and make a family.

H: A boy and a girl can get married. It can be a boy and boy or girl and girl too. It doesn’t have to be girl and boy, but only they can have a baby. If you think the person is good, then you can get married.

R: What if we don’t like the person we marry? What if you want to marry, but you can’t find anyone? Maybe you can marry a paper, sand you can make a puppet!

Those are great ideas and questions about being married. Who do you know that is married?

H: C! N! B! V!

M: N!

How do we know if someone is married?

M: She told me!

H: They don’t need to tell you. They wear a ring.

Do we know anyone else who is married besides the Ohana teachers?

R: Everyone’s mommy and daddy.

C: No, not all. Some moms marry with nobody. Some people don’t want to get married.

R: Some people just mommy.

When we were talking about families, we mentioned that all families are different and some don’t have a mommy and daddy, and sometimes they’re not married for various reasons. Do you have any other ideas about marriage?

R: If the family name is the same, that means you’re married. How do they get the same family name?

H: My dad’s name was S. Mom and dad got married and they decide to be S. My mom doesn’t know why and just say okay!

Where do our family names come from and why? Who decided which name to choose? There are so many other things on our minds about marriage.

HOMEWORK

If we know someone who is married, we will ask them why they got married! Maybe we can ask our parents, grandparents, or teachers!

Have a wonderful evening! See you tomorrow!

Love,
