Hinamatsuri

Wonderful Wednesday! Today we had A (S’s mom) and A (Y’s mom) come to Petals to talk to us about Hinamatsuri and where they were born. A and A started by showing us pictures of their families and taught us where they were born.

E: That is S’s mom!

R: And Y’s mom.

Nimo: Why do you think they are here?

R: I don’t know.

Nimo: We will find out! Petals remember to use your listening ears and raise your hand when you want to speak.

Petals: Okay!

Y’s mom started by introducing us to Y’s baby pictures!

J: Baby (Yuka’s baby picture)

Y: Y baby!

She told us Y was born in Tokyo and she has 13 year old brother! A also taught us about Omiyamairi, a visit to the temple celebrating 100 days and Okuizome, the first meal for the baby. Aiko told us that S was also born in Tokyo and he has a big sister and a little brother. She introduced us to S’s grandparents and shared pictures of his Okuizome.

After we learned about their birthplaces, they taught us about Hinamatsuri. Hinamatsuri is “Girls Day” celebrated on the 3rd of March to wish for good health and happiness. They showed us pictures of the “Hina” dolls that people in Japan take out to decorate their rooms. There are lots of people and things on the Hina Dan (steps) and A and A explained each one to us! We also took a look at some yummy foods people eat on Hinamatsuri like Chirashizushi and Hina Arare. They read us a Kamishibai (Paper Theater) about Hinamatsuri in Japanese!

We all took a seat at the table for our Hinamatsuri origami craft! A and A gave each of us two pieces of origami paper. We followed their instructions and folded them into the prince and the princess! We picked a color out of the bunch of markers then drew the face on our paper hina dolls!

We thanked A and A and said good bye. We sang and danced to a few songs then did a short show and tell about our dads! We got the quiz our dads filled out on Dad’s day and then told our friends what our dads did for work and how old they were!

Next, we looked at the book, “Runaway Hug” by Freya Blackwood. Our focus today was the toilet and the bedroom. We talked about what we could see in these rooms.
