Tsukimi Craft and the Moon

Circle time started with learning two things that are important for us this month. Do you know what these two things are? A clue is…. They make us feel very excited! These are Grandparents’ Party and Sports Day! We began working on our Sports Day chant and our dance with our grandparents😊 We can’t wait to dance and play games with our grandpas and grandmas next week. It made us happy to hear that our grandparents who may not be able to come to Ohana can send their video message to us! Yay!

QUESTION OF THE DAY (Can you see the moon?)

Today’s question sounded a bit tricky and made us think about our answer. We remembered that we made our tsukimi craft in the morning, and talking about the moon was so timely!

Here are the interesting things we shared with our class:

(NO!)

Mi: Because it’s hiding back in the clouds.

Ju: Because it’s going too fast, I can’t even see it. When it’s morning time in Japan, it goes to Canada.

            Yu: It’s going down.

Sh: It goes so slow in the sky. After Shabbat, we look for the moon.

Ai The clouds don’t cover it so fast.

(YES!)

            Zo: Yes, moon around chikyuu.

            Ty: Only at 7 o’clock.

O: Moon is my car following me.

            Sh: Me too!
To: The sun is following on the train. The moon is so love me!
Re: If El goes to sleep, I can see the moon.

M: I always see the moon on the train, bicycle, car and when I walk.

Yu: Sometimes I can see the moon.

R: Sometimes I can see the moon when Ke goes to school.

Ai: Sometimes in the morning I see a half-moon.

As were talking about the moon and the tsukimi craft that we made, we wondered what “tsukimi” meant. Ju said, “Tsuki is moon” while Mi added, “Miru is like watch”. What could be the meaning of tsukimi? We felt excited when we heard that some parents are coming next week to talk about tsukimi.

Back to our discussion about moons, Z showed us how the moon spins around the earth. Some of us thought that it is the earth that spins around the moon. Ju raised his hand and suggested that, “every planet follows the earth”. A planet? Our friends said that planets have names. Still others added that some planets have more moons than others. As our discussion gained more ideas, we found ourselves having different ideas about the same planets. It was almost lunch time, so these 3 items were left to be our “homework” for tonight. Please share tomorrow!

*What are the planet names?

* Do planets have the same number of moons?

*Which one spins around, earth or moon?

Some of our friends shared that they could only see the moon at night. Moreso, it appears that it follows them anywhere they go! Why don’t you check it out tonight. If you happen to see a moon tonight, please take note of its shape and if it’s true that it follows you😊

Have a lovely evening!
