Leaf Scavenger Hunt

Welcome back for Week Four of summer school! This week’s theme is “Nature Detectives”! As soon as we arrived at school we all get ready for the park and played with the play dough or magnet shapes while we waited for our friends to get ready too. We sat down in a small circle and our teachers showed us some leaf shapes. Today we looked for a spear, heart, hand, round, and needle shaped leaves. We spilt into two groups and went over to Step Park to hunt for leaves. It was a lot of fun going in and out of bushes and behind trees to look for different shapes of leaves. It was super hot outside so we made sure to drink lots of water and didn’t stay at the park for too long.

When we got back, we quickly got changed into our pool gear for water play! Jumping into the cool water after being outside felt amazing! Our friends had a great time splashing their feet and sticking their hands in the fountain water. As our teachers helped us get changed, Maryna read us some stories while we waited for everyone else to get dried up and dressed. When we got back to class we gathered in a circle and sang some songs and danced to, “Walking in the Jungle”. Each of our friends had a turn to make the sounds of the animal and show the class what actions they do.

E: Ribbit, ribbit… A frog, frog jumps like this!

T: Honk honk! Flamingo, I can stand on one foot.

D: Elephant! Bwaaa! Long nose!

I: Ooo ooo ahh ahh! Monkey!

L: Rawwwwwwr!!!! A tiger!

L: I don’t want to do it.

We all sat down and started with a story. Today’s story was “That’s Good! That’s Bad!” by Margery Cuyler. After we finished reading the story, we revisited a page with a lot of leaves. Nimo asked us to point to a leaf and tell us what shape it was.

After our book time, we got our bags full of leaves from the park and we laid them out. Our friends picked up the leaves they found and told us what shape they thought it was. Some of our friends also picked up some leaves with a shape that wasn’t on our scavenger hunt list. They showed it to our friends and told us what shape they thought it could be. We also picked up some of the leaves and smelled them.

E: I want to smell the big one! Mmm!

L: Yuck! I don’t like it!

T: Ahhhhhh! Good!

L: *Shook her head* I don’t like.

I: Hmmm… What is this smell?

D: *Smiles* I like it!

We had a very busy day today so we skipped our morning snacks. We were all super hungry so we quickly washed our hands and sat down for lunch time!

Thank you all for another wonderful day! Have a great evening and we will see you all again tomorrow!

Love,

Petals
