Doctors in Petals!

Exploring Health and Healing: A Marvelous Monday at Petals Class.
Our morning started with excitement as the children engaged in a variety of activities. From spelling their names to honing fine motor skills with playdough and finishing our Dad’s Day gift, our morning was filled with creativity and learning. After gathering into a circle, R led our rendition of the Good Morning song. Evita, revisited the community helpers we have learned and focused our attention on those who heal and protect us from being sick. She prompted the class to think about who we turn to when we’re sick, starting a thoughtful discussion. As we delve into the world of healthcare, she introduced the class to the human skeleton and body organs igniting curiosity where each body organs are placed in our body. With the help of a stethoscope, the children learned how doctors use this tool to listen to our heartbeat and our lungs. She then showed the class the carton x-ray machine and demonstrated how doctors diagnose broken bones. Kotaro tried our x-ray machine by putting his foot in it. The class continued the discussion on how doctors would mend broken bones , learning about cast and the healing process. With a lot of excitement they took the roles as doctors, tenderly caring for their baby dolls in need of an x-ray. Each child took turns placing their dolls into the x-ray machine and carefully applying cast. After eating our snack, we decided to stay indoors because it was cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Our teachers prepared a lot of activities to keep us busy: Turtle Walk and Baby Bird Balancing for our gross motor skills. For our book time, Evita read Zog and the Flying Doctors. The story revolves around Princess Pearl and Gadabout the Great that flies around with the flying dragon named, Zog. They are flying doctors that help everyone in need but the King doesn’t believe that princesses can be doctors too. One day the King suddenly became ill and Princess Pearl together with Gadabout and Zog helped find a cure. The King then realized that princesses can be doctors too!

R: Ambulance
J: Japanese says “Okusuri”
M: Kyukyusha (referring to ambulance in Japanese)
Evita: The teachers would always tell you to walk instead of running in class because we don’t want you to fall down and bump your head. If you fall and bump your head, what could happen to you?
M: No bones!
E: I’m fast!
J: We will get a booboo.
R: No!
Evita: If you fall down and get an ouchy, how can a doctor find out if you broke any bones?
J: They will use the Stethoscope.
R: They will look at the ouchy.
Evita: Do you know what this is? ( showing the carton x-ray machine)
Petals: ???
Evita: This is an x-ray machine. It’s like a camera that takes pictures and helps the doctors find out if we have broken bones. You put your hand inside and after a few minutes this film will come out. ( showing an x-ray machine). If our bones are broken, what can a doctor do to help heal it?
J: They could use a bandage.
Evita: Doctors can put bandages or slings to sprained wrist or ankles but they put cast if the bones are broken. It is harder than a bandage, so you won’t be able to move it. It keeps you from moving the bone while it is still broken.
Baby Doll Cast Application:
