Left or Right?
An exhilarating day met Petals today as we had the pleasure of welcoming Maryna to our class! Marina assisted us in our preparations for the winter party, and this morning, we practiced our dances with her. An extra layer of creativity and fun filled our day with time spent singing our original songs about colors and feelings.
R: My mommy is not yet here (for the winter party). *when asked to go to his spot for the winter party presentation
E: How about scarecrow (a dance about scarecrows)?
Once our dance practice was over, we sat down in the library for our story time with Evita. She read " Left And Right" by Taylor Farley. It’s a book that does an excellent job in introducing the concept of directions.
L: I know my left and right
T: This one! (*raises his left arm)
M: Is this one?
D: right foot!
P: this one (*point at her right foot)
R: If you put it together it’s a triangle (after bringing together his left and right index fingers and thumbs together)
D: I have a scooter here. My scooter here is red
P: My home, I have pink scooter
R: black (scooter)
L: red (scooter)
M: purple(scooter)
T: red (scooter)
K: blue and orange (scooter)
E: rainbow (scooter)
Evita: What do we do before we cross the street?
L: Put our hands up!
Evita: What else do we need to do? How would we know if there are cars coming?
Petals: Look!
E: I don’t need to look
L: (look)right
E: (look) left and right
After the story, Evita directed an activity to strengthen their understanding of left and right. She placed laminated dots on the table, one signifying “left” and the other “right”. On either side she placed a feeling plushie and asked the class to name the feelings associated with each plushie. Then she posed a question, “Which feeling is on your left/right?”
Identifying feelings plushie
J: happy! (Joy)
L: scared (Fear)
D: yucky!
E: disgusted (Disgust)
M: sad (Sadness)
T: angry
Left and Right Game
Right- K: sad
Left-P/J: happy
Left- L/E: disgusted
Right-R: angry
Right-M: scared
Left-D:angry
Right-T: angry
Left-E: disgusted
Left-J: happy
Evita made it a little difficult by adding a challenge to everyone. Each chose a plushie and was told to move it either left or right. This hands-on activity not only reinforced their understanding of directions but also tied back to our past lesson about feelings.
J: Joy (left)
K: Joy (right)
T: Anger (left)
M:Joy(left)
L: Anger (right)
D: Anger (right)
Rigel: Fear(right)
P: Joy (right)
E: Anger(right)
What a busy, wonderful Tuesday it was here at Petals! We’re so proud of how our little learners are growing in confidence, coordination, and emotional understanding. Stay tuned for more updates as we prepare for our winter party!
Love,
