New Year's Traditional Games

Happy Friday! We had an amazing week coming back to school after the winter break. Our stories from all the wonderful things that we did during the break seemed like endless! Thank you so much for sharing your interesting stories!

Please read on to find out how fun our day was today!

MORNING ACTIVITIES

Our friends were able to finish their winter break drawings. We can’t wait to see all the drawings displayed on our art wall. For free play, we set up a table with cutlery and food toys set in the library. We had fun playing restaurant by setting up food on the table. At one point, Be suggested that our friends who came to eat wear kimonos.  We had fun creating different things such as vehicles and robots with blocks. The puppets and cute masks were a great addition to our dramatic play, too!

For our table activities, it was great to play a matching board game with our friends and teachers.  We got super excited each time we were able to match the pictures! Our letter and sound recognition skills found a fun way of practicing it. We had white boards to place the magnetic letters on as we tried to make simple words and names.

CIRCLE TIME

Before heading out to the park, we had a short circle time first. We continued looking at a book about junk food that we read yesterday. Before moving on with the discussion, we had a short talk about what we thought of what junk food is.

Cl: It’s very yummy but it makes your teeth ouchie.

Mi: Junk food have sugar inside.

M: Candies make our tummy ouchie.

Be: If you eat junk food, your teeth will turn brown.

Au: It’s not good for your body, so you can just eat a little sometimes.

Re: It’s not good for kids.

E: Junk food has sugar in it.

Then, we heard that there’s another word that we can use that has the same meaning as junk. Vieda reminded us about our big container that has different recycled materials that we use for our arts.

Au: Oh, it’s like the junk art materials.

Vieda: Why do we call it our junk art materials?

Cl: You don’t need all of this one!

Ei: We can make something new with the junk art materials.

T: The word the same as junk is trash!

When we heard what Theo said, we were surprised. We can easily say junk food, but not trash food ☹

We went back to what we talked about this week that focused on healthy and unhealthy.

Be: Broccoli is healthy because there is no sugar.

Ke: Tomatoes, because I don’t know.

Mi: If there’s sugar, then it’s not healthy because it makes our tummy big!

Next week, we will take a deeper look at how we can classify food as healthy and unhealthy and the factors that make them as they are. We will try to keep our bodies healthy by giving them healthy foods!

We looked at a book that shows what we have inside our bodies. We saw different body organs that could be affected by the food we put in our body. This led us to talk about our homework, “Are fried potatoes or French fries healthy?”.

Mi: No, it’s because some our potato fries have sugar.

Ty: No, because lots of oil!

Mi: If no oil, it’s healthy.

E: What will happen if oil, salt, and potatoes are mixed?

Gr: It becomes yummy but stomach ouchie!

Today we discovered that sometimes we can find ways to make unhealthy food into something healthy. We’re excited to learn more about this in our next circle time discussions!

QUESTION OF THE DAY (Do you know what fuku warai is?)

Big thanks to Veronica for reading today’s question of the day. We shared some of our guesses what fuku warai is.

E: Is it something like a dragon?

Co: It’s something like that kimono and it’s for shougatsu.

          Ty: It’s a kimono.

          E: We throw rice.

          Hi: Warai is laugh.

We talked about two traditional games that are played during the New Year’s celebration in Japan. They are the fuku warai and hane tsuki. We separated into two groups and took turns in playing these games. Fuku warai indeed made us laugh a lot as we made funny faces in the picture while blindfolded! Hane tsuki energized us as we felt like we were engaged in a sport! We had so much fun playing these games, and would love to play them again!

We hope you had a fantastic Friday, too! Have a great weekend!

 Lots of love,

Flowers XOXO
