How Does Rice Grow?

Happy Monday! The weather has finally cooled down a little bit and we’re enjoying it!

MORNING ACTIVITIES

We continued to work on our insect habitat by making insect tunnels and homes in the underground soil we made on Friday. We also finished drawing our bodies and clothes for the stick figures that go with our new feelings board in the library.

UPCOMING SPORTS DAY

Sports Day is this Wednesday, so we discussed what we should wear...

Hi: Ohana t-shirts.

Gr: Sports day clothes.

Au: A hat because it’s hot.

Be: Shoes that are good to run.

Those ideas are perfect! Everyone please wear their Ohana t-shirt, clothes that you can move in, shoes that you can run in, and maybe a hat too!

We also practiced our chant again, and we have the words down well. We could even do it without our teachers’ help! We’re excited for Sports Day!

CIRCLE TIME

Our circle time began with a request from Au to show something to the class. He went to his box, and returned to the circle with some kind of plant in his hands…

Au: Inside the plant there is rice! I got it from rice planting. Close to Fuji. I learned how it grows there. It’s in the ground and you need to pull it. I took a knife and cut it from the bottom. Then they put the rice in a bag and put it on a truck and sell it to the shop.

Flowers had many questions for Au…

Gr: What’s this thing?

Au: Inside there is rice.

Ei: Why is the rice brown?

Au: Because it was underground, so it’s dirty.

Hi: Why do they have holes?

Au: So you can open it.

Ta: (in Japanese) Can you eat this?

Au: Not the plant, you need to open and inside there is rice.

Ty: Can you open one?

Au: Yes, we can!

Au showed us how to crack open the shell and reveal the rice inside. Then he passed around one to everyone so that we could all try to open it. Au made it look easy, but it wasn’t. We struggled to open it and asked Au to help us.

Gr: How to open this?

Au: You need to do like this!

Once we saw the inside, it looked more like the rice that we’re familiar with.

Ri: Rice!

Re: Can we eat the inside?

Au: Yes! But you need to cook it first.

After a while, some of us started to figure out how to open it.

Be: I did it!

Re: Can I have more?

Au gave us more to open! It was really fun and exciting to learn where our rice comes from.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

This morning, Mi read the question all by herself, so we asked her to read it again for the whole class!

Mi: Can insects be pets?

Ve: No!

Re: No. Because actually they are not pets.

Ri: No. Because they have mom and dad.

Hi: No. Because they cannot change to pets.

It seemed like we were all on the same page that insects cannot be pets. What kinds of animals can be pets then?

Mi: Dog

Ta: Cat

Re: Hamster can be a pet.

Be: Fish

So, if those animals can be pets, why can’t insects?

Yu: They can’t be pet because they have wings.

Mi: Sometimes insects can fly and we can’t play with them.

What would happen if we tried to have an insect as a pet?

Au: If we take them out of their habitat, they will die!

Before going to lunch, we each told the class which pets we and our families have, if any. Most of us had pets, but no insects! Maybe we are right about insects not being pets.

Have a wonderful evening! See you tomorrow!

Love,

Flowers XOXO
