Can Bee Live in the Pond?
September 12, 2023
Happy Tuesday! Our terrific Tuesday started with activities that made our fingers busy. On one table, Axel helped us to work on wooden threading shapes. The threading shapes were quite interesting but thought that threading the yarn might be challenging. Our teachers encouraged us to try at least once, which we did. It was fun making our own design by threading the yarn to different holes. We were so proud of our own designs and ended up doing more than one shape and pattern! On another table, we continued working on the special card for our grandparents. This time, we made flowers by fork painting for the card cover. We chose the colors that we thought our grandparents might like. We hope they would like these cards😊
FIRE DRILL
Today was the first fire drill of this school year. Since we had some new friends, we talked a little about fire drills and what we must do when we have it, and why we do it at Ohana. Our “returnees” Flowers friends were such a big help! For a starter, Vieda asked who do we need to call for help when there’s a fire.
Sh: Firefighters
Ke: Ambulance and firefighters. Fire fighters put fire in the water. Policeman is putting the gun at fire and shoot.
Mi: Police don’t gonna chase the fire. Fire fighters gonna chase the water.
R: Ambulance come because someone die.
Ke: If someone die in fire, ambulance will come.
Hi: My daddy and I said hello to the ambulance and firefighters.
Ta: Ta ambulance ni nottan da yo! Arerugi dakara!
Co: Ta said he sit on the ambulance because of allergy.
What should we do if we have a fire in Flowers?
Ke: We need to run.
Au: One teacher call the ambulance, one teacher call the firefighter, and other other teacher call the police. That’s why we need 3 teachers.
Be: You need to leave your things and leave the room. You just drop them even though they might break.
Hi: We go outside and wear helmet.
Thank you for sharing! Then, we heard the fire alarm. So, we put our hand over our nose and mouth and use the other hand to feel what’s in front of us. We heard that in case of real fire, the room might be filled with smoke which would prevent us from seeing what’s in front of us. Nobody changed their indoor shoes. Everyone quietly went downstairs while covering our nose and mouth. Our teachers gave us 10 big claps because we did a great job!
CIRCLE TIME
For circle time, we enjoyed learning a song about bees that has the same words as the chant we had last week. The difference is that as bees, we buzzed to certain locations. We learned how to buzz high and low, fast, and slow, and even buzzing to the left and right! Let’s see if we could try to do it at home, too!
Thanks so much to H for reading today’s question of the day. She said, “Do (can) insects move to another house?”. We have been learning about the insects’ habitats and what they eat. Today, we wondered what would happen if they were not in their own home or habitat. Could they move to another insect’s house? Before moving on for discussion, we looked back at what we have learned so far. We took out our book about bugs and took a little quiz about the insects’ habitats.
Question: Where do bees live?
Au: Beehive!
Question: Where do ants live?
Yi: Under the ground.
Question: Where do the ladybugs go?
Ty: Under the water?
Ke: Under the soil!
Question: Where does the mayfly live?
E: In the pond. What if my mom and me have a hard time finding a web spinner?
T: I have one at home.
Our teachers were impressed at how well we remember the insects’ habitats or homes. We wondered what could possibly happen if we put the bees in the water?
Au: It dies because they drink the water from the pond and it’s bad for them.
Ty: Maybe it will sink.
Be: If bee goes in the water, it cannot swim and will sink in the bottom of the pond.
Ve: No!!!!
Mi: When bee lives in the water, bee is going to dive in the water and die.
Au: They will need their goggles.
E: No, they don’t have goggles.
Ke: Bee swim in the water, but shark in there, so it dies.
Co: It will die because the shark come to the pond and will eat the bee. So, it will die.
Au: They can have goggles from their friends, so they all have goggles, but they might die.
Ta: Mizu no nak ani iki ga dekinai kara ukanjau. (They can’t breathe if they have been in the water. They will not die but they will float.)
The more we thought about it, the more our interest grew stronger in the possible things that could happen to insects when their habitat changed. We would love to hear more of your ideas about this matter tomorrow!
Have a lovely evening!
Please remember to wear your Ohana T-shirt tomorrow.
Lots of love,
Flowers
