How Many Legs Do Insects Have?

Today, we welcomed another new friend into our class. Welcome to Flowers Class Ta! You came into our room this morning bright, positive, and full of energy! We’re excited for you to join our group and can’t wait to get to know you!

Happy Wednesday! Today is our first full day of school for the year, and we are already more than halfway through our first week!

MORNING ACTIVITIES

We continued painting our self-portraits, which represent each of us perfectly! We’ve also been working on our “first drawing” with the theme, “My Summer Break.”

STORY TIME – The Egg

Today, our teachers debuted a new portion of our daily routine, story time! Our teachers often read books to us pertaining to our theme/topic, but now we will get the chance to read books of our choice! Each of us will get the opportunity to choose any book from our library for the teachers to read to us!

Today’s library leaders Au and Ei chose our book, The Egg. The cover showed a picture of an egg. What could be inside?

Ei: A chick is inside!

We turned the page and saw something inside, but it wasn’t a chicken…

Th: It’s the yolk!

Next we saw a fertilized egg with something small inside. Mi noticed the inside of the egg was different and said, “Why is the chick not inside?” Au told us that the small thing inside the egg will, “turn into a chicken! It’s inside there! He will come out and the egg will crack”

The small thing inside the egg kept growing and eventually it got big enough to break out of the egg.

Gr: A chick!

The book showed many kinds of bird eggs, and we tried to think which bird has the biggest egg…

Ei: Ostrich has the biggest eggs!

After seeing all of the eggs that come from birds, we thought about other animals that have eggs…

Gr: Snakes

Au: Shrimp

Th: Frogs

Re: Dinosaurs

Ke: Crabs

We enjoyed learning about eggs and the process of them becoming chickens. It’s fun to choose the books that we read together as a class! We can’t wait for our turn to choose the next one!

CIRCLE TIME – Summer Break

We began our circle time by sharing some of the fun things we did while on summer break!

Mi: I go to Hokkaido with mommy and daddy. It was so fun! I do bubbles in the bath.

Ar: We went to Suwako. I played with my friend and watch videos.

Sh: I go with my sister to the beach in Israel!

Au: I went with my sister to the beach. I saw a lot of crabs, but I don’t know how many. I found a diamond and I bring it home, but I don’t know if it’s a real diamond.

Ri: I go to America, and I got popcorn. I look at soccer!

Ke: I go to beach in Niigata and I, my mommy saw crabs. A big crab, that big!

Cl: A box, boxing. It is fun!

Th: I went to a circus. There was a ball pit. I went to a hotel like my house. I have a new house. It’s not this way, it’s the other way.

Re: I went to the pool that’s big. Mommy wait for me and we swim. I have goggles! I swim in the sea too! I like swimming in the sea more! I love it!

We enjoyed hearing all about each other’s holiday! It seems like everyone had a great time with friends and family!

QUESTION OF THE DAY – Do insects have six legs?

Se volunteered to help read the question of the day!

We have spent the last two days talking about insects, but our teachers still haven’t told us the facts about what an insect actually is. Before they shared some of those facts with us, we used our prior knowledge to show what we already know. We took turns going to the whiteboard to draw an insect and then describe what we drew to the class. Here are a few descriptions of what we drew…

Ke: I draw a bee! It has legs and an ouchie one! In Hiroshima, mommy here and here got ouchie and put ice. All better now!

Ar: I draw a spider! It has eight legs.

Cl: It has wings!

Ke: Does it eat bugs!

Cl: No.

Mi: A draw a firefly.

Re: A butterfly, it has eyes here!

Gr: It’s a spider!

Th: I draw a cicada! Those are the wings.

Ri: It’s a butterfly, wings and hair!

Ta: Kuwagata (stag beetle)

After everyone had a chance to draw, we looked at our book which showed what an insect looks like and the different body parts that they have. We could see six legs, wings, antennae, and three distinct parts of the body called the head, thorax, and abdomen.

We looked at our drawings on the board to see if we drew insects. Many of our drawings included what we could see in the diagram from the book! We already know a lot about insects, so we have a great starting point to learn more in the coming days!

Have a wonderful evening! See you tomorrow!

Love,

Flowers XOXO
