What is Origami ?

Good afternoon, everyone!
Today marks the 3rd day of our art themed week of "Ohana's got talent" summer school.

MORNING ACTIVITIES
As a welcome, our teachers prepared a lot of things for our morning activities. We got to make our own Japanese Origami. But how does that even work? It looks a bit difficult at first but with patience and gentle hands, it’s not that hard. First, we need to fold the paper following a certain pattern: twice as a triangle and then once as a rectangle. Afterwards, by unfolding it in a certain way, it became a fish shaped origami.

As some of our friends were creating their own paper fishes, some others were busy personalizing their portraits with glued feathers and strings! It was so fun, and everyone was so creative! After packing everything away, we headed to Step Park for a little session of outdoor play.

CIRCLE TIME
But soon, it was already time for our circle time. After doing some stretching and some physical exercises, we decided to sing our “Hello song”! But this time, we took the role of the teacher singing the song on our own and teaching it to Axel! A even said to him: Now you know everyone’s name!

Afterwards, we were asked about our homework from yesterday, remember that we talked about 3D shapes? Vida wanted us to ask our parents about the word for the 3D shape of an egg! But oopsie… most of us forgot, so we tried to guess:

A: It can be anything.
K: In my school, there was a 3D shape and my teacher told me, but I forgot.
R: I asked my teacher, but my teacher didn’t know.
G: A circle. It’s not a circle, it is flat. That round ball can roll.
H: I asked my daddy, but my daddy don’t know.
Then the teacher told us: “It is actually called an ellipsoid”.
K: I forgot already!

Then we talked a bit about our morning crafts: “remember, Flowers, what did we make this morning?”
R: A fish
H: Origami!

But what is Origami?
T: It’s like a fish that is swimming.
K: It’s a paper that has colors, and you can fold it however you like!
T: Origami is a fish.
S: We fold a paper.

And what else can we do with Origami?
H: Sometimes we can make a dinosaur and my mommy can make a piano.
T: How about a game? A treasure hunt!
S: I can do a triangle.
C: Make Origami cookies.
R: I can make anything.
K: I can make a bird, heart one or fox. I do with mommy a bird that has a tail. I can make it by myself nut first mommy showed me.
R: When I finished ballet, I make Origami and I make stars.

So now that we know a bit more about Origami, it’s time for our “Question of the day”: Do you like Origami?

W: No because mommy didn’t buy it.
R: No because I don’t know how to do Origami.
C: Yes, it’s fun!
G: Because I go outside

But remember what is the theme of this week? H raised her hand and answered “Artists!” That’s right, and especially art in all its forms. So, do you think that Origami is an art?

S: No because I see on the video Artist don’t make Origami.
K: Yes, because a lot of things are art, not just painting.
H: Because artists work every day.
T: Yes, because last time my new school was opened, my teacher said: “Origami is art”.

STORY TIME
It was soon the time to read a little story. Our teacher chose “The Snail and the Whale” by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. This story is about a little snail that goes on an adventure along a whale, they go through different continents and discover a lot of different animals and landscapes. For our Flowers friends, story time is also the opportunity to interact and ask questions by raising their hands before pointing directly in the book what they want to show us:

G: A penguin!
T: Seals! Those are leopard seals!
G: There is lava coming down the mountain.
T: There are small waves and big waves.
S: Thunder makes the wave.
A: The whale’s gonna get electrical shock. The whale is gonna get to the sand and get tired.

As we grow, so do our own artistic talents and perception of the world around us. Today, our friends from Flowers class got the opportunity to express themselves through another type of art that will be showcased during our art gallery on Friday! Please look forward to it!

See you tomorrow for more adventures!
Lots of Love <3
