Geometric Animals

It’s week three of summer school and we are excited to get our hands busy with being creative and exploring the big world of ART! Here are the different stations that were prepared today:

Process Group Art

Throughout this week, we will be creating two process group artworks to strengthen our communication and social skills as compared to doing individual artworks. Through working together, we learn how to take in social cues such as waiting for one another’s turn in using materials and interacting while creating.

Today we focus on SCRIBBLING. What are the many different tools we can use to scribble with? Crayons, markers, color pencils and oil pastels were the variants to choose from and each one of us had a particular preference. We were also able to work on figuring out the best way our fingers could form a grip while using these coloring materials.

N worked with a particular color scheme in mind by choosing pinks and reds to scribble.

I followed the downward direction of drops by scribbling downwards

L was quite amazed when he learned that he could use his finger to “spread out” the colors from an oil pastel

Apart from working together and scribbling, we are also exploring what colors would work best and pop out the most on both black colored and white colored papers. Our teachers noticed that we tended to use more “force” when scribbling on the black colored paper for the colors to stand out more.

Comparing the Animal Images from Different Books

What is art? How is art different from one person to another person? Everyone has their own interpretation of what art is and this is quite a BIG topic for us in Buds Class. To guide us in understanding this, several books containing different images of animals were read to us to compare how animals were presented differently.

First book was Eric Carl’s “Today is Monday” wherein different animals were used to portray the days of the week and the types of food that one can eat!

The second book was Deb Gruelle’s “Ten Little Night Stars” wherein different animals were used to portray the bedtime routines that we may also be doing at home to prepare ourselves for a good night’s sleep.

We were asked to put our attention on how even though we can identify two images as the same animal, it still looked different from one another.

Geometric images of animals were finally presented for us to try to guess and identify. It took us quite a while to figure out and our facial expressions spelled out “Huh?” and showed confusion as it was most likely the first time for most of us to see these types of images.

L and N were able to correctly guess most of the images!

Each one of us was asked to choose which geometric image we would like to color on. N chose the cat, L chose the giraffe, A chose the horse, I chose the bear while D had fun trying to fit in the crayons through his fingers.

We also read the book “Beautiful Oops” by Barney Saltzberg to be inspired that even in the most simple and mundane moments, we can create art.

Outdoor Play

It was a lovely day to be outside and play together with our friends from Petals and Flowers Class. D found a wooden stick and pretended to draw in the air. He also liked looking after I who guided him in going around the field in meeting friends from different classes.

We hope everyone is having a great start to the week!

Love,
