Bugs!

Happy Tuesday! We were very happy to see the sunshine today and took it as an opportunity to play at the park. We had lots of fun running around with friends that made us sweaty😊 Most of us looked like as we just had a shower! Please find out all our Tuesday adventures below:

 MORNING ACTIVITIES

We had a table full of insects and bugs toys, as well as dried bug models. Some of us may be a bit scared of real bugs, so the bug models offered a good chance for us to see bugs closely! Da and Ke picked the bugs that looked similar and lined them up. They showed them to their friends and teachers and said, “Look bugs have families, too!”. Minutes passed and it seemed like most of our friends gathered in the library area. Some of our friends sat on the bench and stools and then Hi, H, and Ka sat in front of everyone to do their Show and Tell! Our teachers looked happy and proud as we had our very own Show and Tell😊

CIRCLE TIME

We had a short circle time just before we headed to the park. We talked about the jobs that we have learned so far. Karen remembered that C’s dad, who came to Flowers, is a designer. Some of our friends shared what their dads and moms do, too.

Au – My mom’s job is to bring food from Lithuania.

Hi– My mommy’s job is making my lunch.

Sh – My job is to help people. My dad works is telephone sometimes, and all the time on the computer.

            Ke – I don’t know my daddy’s job.

Re – My daddy’s work is computer.

            R – Mommy’s work is computer.

H– My mommy go work computer. Sometimes mommy telephone and call.

B– Daddy works on the computer. Mommy talks on the phone and sometimes she’s on the television.

            A – My mommy’s job is cooking.

Ka– My daddy’s job is consultant.

D – Mommy’s job is cooking and cleaning t-shirt in the washing machine.

Then, Vieda asked us if we know what we call a person whose job is to study insects. Au said that “maybe they’re called the bug man!”, while Da said, “Bee Man”. Beatrice guessed it as “Maybe bug hunter!”. Good guesses! Vieda wrote the name on the board, and we were able to read it! It’s called the entomologist.

After park time, we had gathered in a circle and this time, we tried to sit in a pattern. What does it mean to sit in a pattern. Ka replied, “A pattern is like you can do red then blue, then red again”. D also shared his idea about pattern, and said, “The pattern we have 4 people in one line and 4 people in the other and make X”. We tried two patterns today --- GIRL-BOY, and GIRL-GIRL-BOY. Through this simple activity, we were able to think and predict what comes next. We love it!

QUESTION OF THE DAY (Do you like bugs?)

Let’s start with our friends who like bugs!

Be – I like catching them but my mom is scared, so I release them.

Sh– I like bugs because when I see them, I step on them.

Ka – If you step on them, imagine if you were little, and someone step on you.

Au– Otherwise they will just die.

Hi – Sometimes bugs make honey for us.

            Re – Because it’s bug.

Au – I like bugs because they are so cool for me.

Now, our friends who answered NO:

An – Because I run away from them.

Br – Because I’m scared of them.

            Ka – Because they’re scary.

Re – Because sometimes bugs give me a bite, like this one on my legs.

Da– When I see a bug, I get scared.

            R – Because I’m scary.

Hi – Because he’s gonna sting and it’s ouchie.

STORY TIME (Fly Guy presents Insects by Ted Arnold and Tricky Treats, October 2014)

The magazines that we read this morning made us feel excited about bugs and insects. We were surprised to learn the smallest insect called fairy fly. Re commented, “You can see mushi with like a window (magnifying glass). Before moving forward with the magazine, Beatrice shared that “bees can take nectar and that’s how we get honey”. Hi looked at the red ants and said, “Ants red and have doku”. Then we turned to the page with cockroaches. Oh my!

Sh - I saw a real one running around in my mom and dad’s room.

R – This one at home, too!

Vieda – What does daddy do when he sees a cockroach?

            Da– Run!

Au– My dad grabs something to catch it.

We wondered what insects do for the earth. Da thinks that “the spider make webs for the trees”.

Ka – Actually a spider is not an insect because most insects have 6 legs.

Sh – Spiders do webs to earth and the earth will get stuck.

Au – They do really bad things. They come to everyone’s house and sting all the people.

Just before we got ready for lunch time, Vieda asked us if we thought bugs could be eaten, too. We all said, “NO!”. We were so surprised with the photos that we saw after! Grasshopper burgers, bugs barbeque, and dragonfly skewer, too!

Sh – Yesterday, I saw a video of the bug that was in the food.

Da – If the people in the other countries eat the spiders?

Then, Vieda continued to read the magazine and came across that talked about Japan. It mentioned that we can find baby bees in cans in Japanese supermarkets. Oh, no?! Baby bees in cans! Re reacted and said, “Maybe because (those baby bees) no long nose (stingers)?”. It seems like we haven’t seen these baby bees in cans in our supermarket yet. Have you?

We hope you had a wonderful Tuesday as well! See you tomorrow! Please remember to wear you Ohana T-shirt😊

 Lots of love,

Flowers
