Flowers' Salon & Barbershop
Happy Monday! We can’t believe it’s already May 1st! This year is flying by!
MORNING ACTIVITIES
With this week being Golden Week, there are many different days to celebrate. One of those days is Children’s Day on Friday, May 5th. With that, we made our own Koinobori out of construction paper and glued sparkly things on it to make them shine! We'll be bringing them home tonight!
This week, we are also continuing our talk about different jobs. Today we will be discussing hairdressers and barbers, so we made a face using construction paper and attached hair to it so that we can test out our hair cutting skills later on today.
CIRCLE TIME
This week is a short week at Ohana. We already knew that, but why?
Hi: Why only two days of Ohana?
Ka: Because it’s Golden Week.
What is Golden Week?
Da: Golden is sparkly!
Hi: Golden Week means we don’t have Ohana.
Re: Golden Week is no more Ohana.
Iz: People go on vacation.
What did we make this morning with Cameron?
HI: Because it’s Kid’s Day, we make Koinobori.
QUESTION OF THE DAY
Ka read our question of the day, “Do you like to get a haircut?”
For those of us who said no, why do you not like to get your haircut?
Hi: Because I want to have Elsa hair.
Hi: Because I want Rapunzel hair.
Iz: Rapunzel don’t want to do haircut.
Re: I won’t want to do haircut because I want to do Rapunzel.
Be: I don’t want to cut my hair.
Ka started to think what might happen if we never get a haircut.
“If you don’t do a haircut, somebody might step on your hair. It will be ouchie because of the shoe.”
What about those of us who like to get our hair cut?
Au: I want to do police hair! All police have same haircut. Every police hair needs to be short and brown.
How do we cut our hair, where do we get our hair cut, and who does it?
Hi: Sometimes my mommy cut my hair. When I am small, someone cut my hair.
Da: I go to cut my hair, because mommy said, “it’s time for haircut.” I go to the barber. Barber is the boy who cuts my hair. He holds it with a brush and cut with scissors. Then spray water and soap inside.
Ka: I got a haircut yesterday at salon. The scissors were golden. I cut my hair and not only that, they use comb. I went to a lady’s.
Iz: Mommy cuts my hair and daddy cuts my hair, but daddy takes too long. My mommy needs to tell daddy how to do it. He needs to listen to mommy.
After our discussion, only Da said that he wanted to be a hairdresser or barber. Next, we set up our own salon/barbershop in Flowers class, so that we could see what it might be like to cut someone’s hair. Before we begin, let’s figure out the process of getting a haircut.
Ka: They need to say something to the barber and to the hairdresser. Because my mommy sends the message. Mommy sending something to the hairdresser, so that you can cut your hair. You need to tell the hairdresser that you’re going.
Hi: We need to ask our mommy and daddy and family who will take us to salon. We need to call the hairdresser and we need a calendar.
Re: You can say front, to hairdresser. You can sleep for a long time.
Ka: Sometimes don’t need to wash your hair.
Re: No wash hair, just stinky hair and then go home. Before you cut hair, you need to wash. It’s okay to cut even your hair is wet. We can use that (play kitchen sink) to wash hair.
Hi: Hair is wet, it’s gonna be soft. Easy to cut.
We decided that some of us would start as hairdressers and barbers, and the rest of us would be getting our hair cut. Eventually we would all get a chance to play both positions.
The hairdressers and barbers set up their salon/barbershop with waiting chairs, hair washing chairs, and hair cutting chairs. We all took turns putting on the apron, washing our hair, and getting our hair cut. The hairdressers and barbers washed and cut our hair, and as Da suggested, swept up the “clippings” afterwards.
We had a lot of fun trying out this profession! It was better than we expected, and I think more of us might want to become hairdressers and barbers in the future. Some of us have quite a knack for it!
Near the end of our experience, we suggested to cut and paint our customer’s fingernails/toenails. We had a foot spa and even cut “cucumbers” to place on our eyes, per Re’s request. Our salon/barbershop was beginning to turn into something more! We’ll keep expanding on our ideas tomorrow.
Have a wonderful evening! See you all tomorrow for the last day of the school week!
Love,
Flowers XOXO
