The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig
“Huh?” We all wondered out loud in confusion during circle time as Pauline told us what book we were going to read for today. We think maybe she got the title wrong…..
We saw two books just to clarify everything- we read through “The Three Little Pigs” and saw the story we all know: the house of straw and sticks that got blown by the wolf; and the strong, sturdy house of bricks. Then, there’s the other book “The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig” by Eugene Trivizas and Helen Oxenbury.
The story starts the same: the mommy thinks it’s time for her children to go out in the world and build their own homes. The same goes for us, too. Since we’ve been talking about growing up and being grown-ups, this was a good book to read. Well, probably minus a big, bad wolf- or a big, bad pig for that matter.
The teachers mentioned that because they’re grown-ups, they have their own homes.
“I have my own home,” C said.
“Me, too!” L agreed.
“But do you live with mommy and daddy?” Pauline asked.
“I live with mommy and daddy,” H said. The rest of the class agreed.
“When you’re all grown up, there will come a time when your mommy and daddy might say ‘It’s time for you to go out in the world and find your own home… and find a job.’,” Pauline said, much like our three little pigs and three little wolves in the stories.
Speaking of that, our three wolves set out to build their own home. They made a house out of bricks, cement, iron bars and metal plates. Each house was stronger and sturdier than the next. But, the big, bad pig- he wasn’t called such- destroyed the houses effortlessly.
The wolves thought why nothing was working- maybe there was something wrong with the materials they were using? They saw a flamingo walk by with a wheelbarrow filled with flowers. They asked nicely if they could have some flowers, to which the flamingo happily obliged.
You know what? They made their house out of flowers! It was so pretty but, unfortunately, the big bad pig followed them. He took a deep breath to huff and puff- and that caused him to smell the sweet scent of flowers. It made him feel so good that he realized that trying to destroy the wolves’ house was bad- and so he decided to be good. The wolves thought it was a trick- but then they saw that the pig really had a change of heart. They had fun playing with him and even invited him for tea and berries. The end! What a nice story!
We just stayed in the classroom today, because the rain was on and off. It gave us a lot of time to dramatize The Three Little Pigs on our own! We used our cardboard house and took turns being the pig and big bad wolf. It was fun- too much fun, in fact, we ran around the classroom screaming and giggling as if the big bad wolf was after us!
Pauline turned off the light, and started counting from 1 to 10. Ooh! That means hide- and- seek! We scrambled for hiding places- in the house, under the table, behind the chairs.
“Ready or not, here comes the big bad wolf!” Pauline said, and we giggled. She found R first! So, it was Rimi’s turn to be the big, bad wolf, or the It! A lot of us became the It- O, S, B, and R.
We had an early lunch today. We made sure that we put our pouches inside our bags after we packed away our lunch boxes and water bottles. A lot of us didn’t even need reminders- we told the teachers, “I already put it in my backpack.” or “I already did it.” It elicited a wistful smile from our teachers- probably because they can see that we are growing up so much in Petals Class…..
