Preparing for Earth Day
Good afternoon moms and dads! Hope you all had a lovely day today! We had a great day at school creating, playing, and learning! We started our morning drawing our World Book Day poster. We sat down around a big piece of paper and we drew any scene or character from a book to decorate our poster. We also sat down at another table to draw and write some things we can do for Earth Day tomorrow. After we finished our crafts we played with the cork blocks together.
We have been going to Step Park these past few weeks, because our teachers decided to go to the closest park until our new friends get used school. Now that they are, we can start taking longer walks to get to our favorite parks! One of them is “Kogai” park. It takes about 10-15 minutes to walk there, but our new friends soon realized that it was well worth it! The zip line, jungle gyms, and swings are so much fun to play with. The park is a little bigger than step park with more trees to climb and flowers/insects to observe! Our flowers friends helped teach H and A how to zoom down the zip line. They really seemed to enjoy it! We also had plenty of room to run and play tag! Our walk back to school was a little tough because we used up so much of our energy at the park.
When we got back, we gathered around and sang a few songs together then talked about Earth Day coming up tomorrow.
Nimo: What can we do for the Earth tomorrow?
K: No plastic.
K: Turn off lights when we go somewhere.
H: Denki (light).
Nimo: Why do we turn off the lights when we leave the house, or when we leave for the park.
K: Because the lights are powered by nuclear plants.
Z: Electricity. I don’t use too much electricity at home.
Nimo: Do you think we need to keep all of our lights on all the time?
T: No, because it’s morning. The sun is up so I can still see.
D: If there’s no light, we can’t see.
Nimo: Let’s count how many light bulbs you see in Flowers class.
We walked around the classroom and counted the bulbs then gathered back together.
Y: 7
T: 16
K: 4
D: 7
H: 9
K: 15
After we made our guesses we walked around the classroom and counted with Nimo. We figured out that there were 16 light bulbs in our classroom.
Nimo: Do we need to keep all 16 on?
A: No!
We asked H, our “Light Helper” for today to go and turn off all the lights.
Y: I can see.
T: Maybe we can just keep two on and turn the rest off.
For Earth Day tomorrow we will try to keep our lights off to save electricity and turn off the tap of the water when we aren’t using it.
T: C brought a bag to pick up plastic at the park. We can do that too.
K: We will have nowhere to go.
T: When the Earth breaks and cracks, maybe we can live on the cracks.
K: Earth gone, then everyone will die…
Before we had our lunch we read one of our favorite books in Flowers Class, “Five Little Gefiltes” by Dave Horowitz. We read our favorite book today because World Book Day is on Monday and our teachers wanted to remind us to prepare costumes to wear on that day. On Monday April 25th we will need to dress up as a character from one of our favorite books. The costumes can be anything, we can buy them, we can make them, we can cut out a picture and stick them on our shirts. Kyosei said his costume was ready for Monday! Many of our friends said theirs weren’t ready so our teachers asked us to get started today so they have lots of time to get ready.
Thank you all for another lovely day! Have a great evening and see you again tomorrow!
Love,
Flowers
