The magic flower game!

Free Play

It started to rain when we come to school this morning. We were all wearing our jackets because it was a bit chilly. As soon as we completes our morning jobs we started our activities. For our free play we were engaged in building and stacking lego blocks on the floor. Some of us made an elephant and an elephant office tower, and stacked them on top of each other, while counting.

Table Activities

Today‘s light table activity created many learning opportunities for all of us. We had our rainbow butterflies cut out for us which were placed on top of it. What a great way to make some cool art work out of laminated colored cellophane. While playing we were able to identify colors and counted the butterflies too.

On another table we had a styrofoam board setup and some colored craft matchsticks. It was a great way to strengthen our finger muscles, as we had to poke and pull off the matches from the board.

Spring is a beautiful time to go outside and see the beautiful colors and signs of growth and new beginnings . It is also an excellent time to explore and learn about flowers. As the season changes from winter to spring, flowers pop up freshly everywhere. Using a large piece of white construction paper and some glue, we glued pieces of foam shapes to create our beautiful flower garden art. It was an excellent opportunity for us to work on some basic shapes and identify colors. We had an assortment of circles, ovals, triangles, squares, rectangles and even raindrops foam shapes. We also discovered foam shapes of butterflies, ladybugs, dragonflies, bumblebees and caterpillars. Some of us stayed at this station for a while.

Inspired by the story, About the “Tiny Seed” by Eric Carle we planted our own seeds. Today we were amazed to see the sprouts coming out of the Mung beans and the chia seeds. This is what we thought about:

  • the seeds changed color and became white

  • We can't touch them (sprouts) because there might be insects inside

  • the seeds grow bigger and there will be flowers afterwards

  • we can grow cabbage, broccoli, strawberry

Before we got ready for snack time, John read us a story about “I Need a Wee” by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet. It was a fun story of a bear who needs a wee, but there are so many things that he would rather do, than go to the toilet.

Circle Time

We had an extended free play after snack time, since we stayed indoors today. We had some animal toys and puzzles on the floor. For some of us who have started to show an interest in puzzles, we worked together, while others played with the animal toys.

We also had our parachute play to keep us moving. This time we used our listening skills while working together to focus on the rhythm that John was playing on the piano. We used the parachute in different ways, by shaking it, moving it up and down, fast and slow.

We also had our magical parachute ride, up in the sky we saw Tokyo Tower, a rainbow, Rainbow Bridge, butterflies and a lot of things. Then Liezel showed everyone what she had.............some beautiful and colorful flowers in the air.

We then played a little game using some laminated flowers, and we had to guess what’s missing? Liezel put all the flowers under a scarf. There were yellow, red, orange, purple and green flowers. Each time we were asked to guess what color flower was missing. We all showed what amazing memories we have and helped our friends guess the correct answer. We were fascinated to see the flowers back at the end of the game.

We all had a fun indoor day!

Love,
