The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Good morning! We had a lovely free playtime. We had a big water play tub on our balcony and used it for washing the toy baby. C especially wanted to play with the toy baby since yesterday. So, Kai helped us to set up and we really enjoyed it! With Pauline, we did a handprint activity. “Can I do this?” R asked her. “I want to do it, too!” R said. Painting on our hands is always fun and a bit ticklish! Haha! The other table was a sakura art table. We made a sakura flower with tissue paper and we stuck it on the paper we already painted the other day. Making the sakura flowers is a bit tricky. We used two fingers and wrapped the paper around our fingers. The movement was a bit hard because we need to control using our hands and eyes at the same time. Sayaka demonstrated how to do it and we practiced a few times. It was a nice hand- and- eye coordination exercise.

After we cleaned up, we gathered together for today’s circle time. “Who is the attendance monitor?” Sayaka asked, and H raised her hands, saying, “H.” H counted both the children and teachers. Then R checked today’s weather as the weather reporter. “It’s sunny!” R announced. We reviewed what we did yesterday with Pauline. C answered, “Camera.” C added that she took photos of the plants because they grow.” Yes, we talked about living things and non-living things and took pictures of them. On the first day we learned about it, Pauline mentioned the book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”, and she asked us if we remember the story. Then we shook our heads and replied, “Noooo.”

We enjoyed learning about it so Sayaka wanted to tell the story. At first, she showed the book and turned the page, one by one.

Sayaka-Is the caterpillar a living thing or non- living thing?

R- Living thing

Sayaka-Is the leaf a living thing or non-living thing?

H- Living thing because it drinks water

Sayaka-How about the moon?

H- Non living thing because it’s not drinking water.

Sayaka-How about the sun?

R- Sun is a non-living thing.

Sayaka-How about the apple?

R- Non- living thing because it don't eat fruit.

Sayaka-How about food?

M - Non-living thing

Actually, we were wondering why Sayaka had an apron on. Lea asked her before we started circle time, “What’s that?” She said to her that she will know about it later…It was actually an apron story! She used the apron to tell the story. O actually remembered it. Sayaka asked us what was happening after the caterpillar ate so much food. He said, “Tummy ouchy.” “What does the caterpillar need to eat?” He said, “The leaf.” It was a fun storytime. Lea asked Sayaka if she could touch the butterfly. She pretended the butterfly is flying.

As we requested to go to the park, so we went. Flowers class joined us to play. The weather was beautiful and we had a fun time at the park.

Thank you so much for today. See you all tomorrow.

Love,
