Our Muscles and Heart

Happy Wednesday!
This morning we started things off by reading a book called Not Quite Narwhal by Jessie Sima. The book is about a unicorn who thought he was a narwhal. When he found out that he was a unicorn, he had "butterflies in his stomach", because he was unsure if his family would accept him or not. We had never heard about "butterflies in our stomach" before. We didn’t know what it meant.

Au: butterflies are flying (in stomach)
Hi: baby butterflies

Cameron asked us if we ever felt a weird feeling in our stomach when we get nervous. We all said, “yes”. We learned that when someone says they “have butterflies in their stomach”, it doesn’t mean that there are actually butterflies in their stomach, it just means that they are nervous.

At the end of the story, we saw that the narwhals had a treasure chest. We took turns guessing what might be inside the chest.

Au: They’re packing the treasure.
Da: There’s treasure in there.
Ky: A pirate found it.
What kind of treasure is inside?
Hi: Chocolate
Hi: Money and necklace
Au: Coins
Iz: Money and toothbrush
Co: Glass
Ri: Money and necklace
Ar: Leaves
Sh: Flowers
An: Toys
Br: Money and toys
Ra: Unicorn

At the end of the story, the unicorn thought he had to make a choice between living with the narwhals or living with the unicorns. But he didn’t choose one over the other..

Da: he chose everybody

We learned that we all have things that make us different, but we also have things that make us the same, and we don’t have to choose between one group of friends and another.

QUESTION OF THE DAY (Can you move your muscles?)

Hi. read our Question of the Day today.

Hi: Can your muscles move?

Most of us said yes. Here are our reasons.

Sh: Because I can feel and touch.
Hi: Because this is moving (muscle)
Au: Because I have skin and hand and I can move everything. I’m moving my hands and they start to move.
Ra: (points to moving arms, legs, and feet)
Da: When I move here my muscles move. When I eat my muscles move. My bones can move and my muscles can move at the same time.
Ky: I feel my muscles moving.

Cameron asked us if we have any part of our body that moves without us thinking about it. Maybe something we talked about before..

Da: When the heart pumping, there’s blood and it goes all the places. When we stop moving, the heart keeps pumping all day.

We all took turns guessing how big our hearts are and wondered if our hearts ever get tired.

Da: The heart don’t talk, and no eyes, no mouth.

I guess we don’t know if our heart gets tired or not, because when we ask our heart, it doesn’t answer us.

We know that our heart is pumping all day long, so we need to take care of it. Here are the ways we thought we could do that.

Au: You eat so much healthy food.
Co: Stretching
Ar: Daddy do exercise in the morning.
Ky: Milk is good for your body.

After talking about our muscles and heart, we all put our hand on our chest and tried to feel our heartbeat. We wondered what would happen to our heartbeat if we did exercise or ran. We all stood up and ran in place for 30 seconds. After we stopped, we felt our heartbeat again. What happened?

Iz: Changed!
Au: When you’re running, your heart moving really fast!

We then sat back on the floor and took a short break to see what our heart would do now.

Sh: It’s a little bit slowing down

We found out that our heart can speed up when we run or exercise and slow down when we rest. We also learned that we need to take care of our heart because it is working all the time!

After that, Maryna came to our classroom and taught us some new Halloween songs and dances. We had fun learning the dance moves and dancing to some spooky songs with ghosts, witches, skeletons, and even Frankenstein!

Today’s weather is rainy, which means we couldn’t go to the park today. So, we played games inside today instead. We played a game called Heads Up, Seven Up. We split into two teams. One team had to close their eyes and gives the thumbs up sign. The other team had to quietly touch the thumb of a friend without being noticed. Then team one opened their eyes and had to guess who touched their thumb. Some of us were really good at guessing who touched their thumb!

We had a really fun day and can’t wait to come back again tomorrow!

Have a great rest of the day! We’ll see you all tomorrow!

Love,

Flowers XOXO
