Plastic in our Ocean

Hello Tuesday! It was such a beautiful day today! October is one of our favorite months because of Halloween. It maybe a little early, but we started making Halloween party’s decorations. On our craft table, we had black constraction paper and white paint. We used various sponges and rollers to paint. Is it a “Spider?” “Ghost?” “Pumpkin?”, thinking about it makes us excited for the party. On the big table, we continued our All About Us art with Nimo. At the back side of classroom, we had sea creatures and wooden blocks. We wonder if the wooden blocks can be the ocean… We used the wooden blocks to make sea creature’s house, it’s always fun to express our creativity through playing.

After we cleaned up, we gathered together for morning circle time. Sayaka reviewed what we did last time. We talked about how we separate trash such us burnable and un-burnable. If it’s un-burnable, or plastic, there is a plastic symbol. We did’t have enough time to find it last time so today we could take turns and found it. Looking at the symbol and we shared our idea.
K: Unburnable?
Sayaka: Look, this is someone’s breakfast.
G: Sayaka coffee?
Sayaka: haha I only drink coffee in the afternoon. I don’t drink coffee in the morning.
R: *Looking at the plastic bottle* Afternoon coffee Sayaka!
Sayaka: haha yes. This bottle is mine. Then whose this? *Showed the package of coffee*
T: Do you drink coffee Nimo?
Nimo: I do!
J: *Finds plastic mark* here! Plastic!
S: *He also found the plastic mark.

After we took turns to try finding the plastic mark, Sayaka explained briefly about recycling. Recycling means making trash into something new. There is a place where we take the trash, but if we take everything everyday, the trash will pile up and we will not have space to keep trash…”What if we have no more space to throw the trash and we have to take trash with us.” At first, we said that it’s ok, we take trash home. Then R shared his thoughts, “I don’t want to take it home!” He was sure that he will be not happy with that. He asked Sayaka, “Are you kidding, Sayaka?”, “Yes”, she told us. T said, “Smelly! (Trash smells bad)”, R added that if she takes trash home, bugs will come to her house… That’s why one of the ideas is recycling. If we try our best to recycle, it will reduce having so much trash. It was a just introduction of recycling and how we take care of our earth. Alright, it’s time for park, we excitedly marched on over and had a blast with Buds and Flowers.

The circle time before Lunch time was a book called SOMEBODY SWALLOWED STANLEY by SARAH ROBERTS illustrated by HANNAH PECK. It’s a book about a plastic bag (Stanly) being swallowed by sea creatures. End of the story, Stanly became a kite because the boy who found Stanly reused it which was the recycling we were talking about. That’s a great idea, we thought. It’s a perfect book for us today since we talked a bit about recycling. After we had the book time, Sayaka asked, “Do you think the plastic bag yummy for us or the turtle?”, we shook our heads.
G: No. No yummy.
T: Eat all of them and get a stomachache.
J: No ocean…No plastic! (We don’t throw trash in the ocean.)
Whenever we go outside such as a park, beach, we put trash in the bin. Especially if we throw trash in the ocean, the sea animals eat it by mistake. Then they could be choking… Some of us said that we put trash in the bin. “Are you ready eat lunch?” Sayaka asked us, we were very hungry after we had lots of running at the park. We enjoyed yumyum time.

Thank you very much for today and see you all tomorrow!
