Counting Fun!
Just like that, time flies fast- it’s already September! Kai said it was the start of the -ber months, and Pauline replied that maybe they can start playing Christmas carols. Sayaka told her it was too early!
If yesterday we started to be familiar with the letters in our names, today we started to get familiar with numbers! Pauline brought out our sandpaper numbers. She showed them to us one by one, and we did our best to identify them.
“Zero!” K replied when Pauline showed us a number that looked like an egg, and the letter that O’s name starts with. He was right!
“Do you know what zero is?” Pauline asked. We shook our heads no.
“For example, someone asks me, ‘Pauline, how many bugs do you have?’” Pauline began. She also took out some colorful bug counters. “I can say, ‘I have zero!’” and she held up her hands with nothing in it. “Zero means there’s nothing!” she explained.
When she was done showing us the numbers, they were not in the proper order on the floor. Pauline asked if we could help her arrange the numbers in order. She started out with 0, then 1, 2… L then put 3, K put 4, H put 5 next, Sh did 6 next, M put 7, B put 8, and finally, Pauline ended it with 9. 10 should come next, and the teachers showed us that by putting 1 and 0 together, then we have 10. Counting on our fingers also helped us figure out which number should come next.
Next, Pauline had a bowl, and the colorful bug counters. She said that when she puts a sandpaper number beside the bowl, then we should also put the same number of bugs in the bowl- using plastic tweezers. Using the tweezers was a bit tricky for us, and it was a good exercise for our fine motor skills. It will help us improve our finger muscles so we can better grip things like pencils and markers- and it will help us improve the way we write and draw!
We did really well with putting the correct number of bugs to match with the sandpaper number that she put beside the bowl. We counted the bugs together and made sure that we got it right. Yay! We did it!
We had snacks after circle time, and prepared for park time. We just put bug spray because it was very cloudy today- and the temperature felt quite cool! We enjoyed playing with the big slide, the jungle gym, and the swings because we had the park all to ourselves! We used some hand sanitizer afterwards before going back to school.
We were quite busy during free play time- Kai helped us do our self- portrait on our portfolios. We did our best to draw ourselves, trying to copy from a picture of us. We had to tell Kai which one was our nose, mouth, and our eyes….. Hehe. In the library, Sayaka read some books to us from the “Don’t Let the Pigeon” series- we laughed while Sayaka read as the Pigeon was hilarious! Toy cars were clearly our favorite as we had them out again- we enjoyed racing them against each other on the floor.
That’s all for this Wednesday. How about you? How was your day?
Love,
All the happy children in Petals Class
