Counting Fun With Tamaire

“What’s ‘Sports Day’?” Pauline asked us during circle time.

“Swimming,” K replied. In the Olympics, there was a swimming race. If Ohana had a swimming pool, then maybe we could have a swimming race, too, hey?

“Oh, you know, Ms. Pauline, C went swimming with W,” C shared.

“That sounds fun,” Pauline said. “Who’s W?” she asked.

“He’s my teacher,” C said.

“Swimming!” R, our new friend in Petals class piped up. “Swimming with Ariel,” she told us.

“Oh! Look at U’s dress,” Pauline said. “It’s Ariel!”

U proudly showed us her dress, which had a picture of The Little Mermaid on it.

Going back to sports day, we remembered the games that we played with Sayaka and Kai at the park last Friday- we had tug- of- war and racing. Pauline said that on our sports day, which is coming soon, we’re going to play a lot of games and do a lot of races.

Today, we were going to practice tamaire. We were quite familiar with this game, as we played this once before. It’s a fun game, and we’re glad we have this for sports day!

Pauline brought out our easel, which had baskets tied to each side. We counted two baskets. The first basket had a picture of a--

“Triceratops!” O excitedly said. Yes, he was right.

“And what color is it?” Pauline asked.

“Yellow!” We all answered.

Our teachers then brought out balls in 2 different colors- red and yellow.

“What ball should I put inside the basket?” Pauline wondered out loud. She picked up a red ball and… there she goes... she’s going to put it in…

“Noooo!” Some of our friends said.

“It’s not the same- same,” Lea explained.

“This-- this one,” R said. She handed Pauline a yellow ball. L and our other friends nodded their heads in agreement. They’re right! Pauline said that when we play tamaire, there will be two teams. If you’re Team Yellow Triceratops, then you just have to put all the yellow balls in your team’s basket.

“Red is ‘boo- boo’,” Ksaid.

Pauline showed us the other basket and it had a picture of a--

“Dinosaur,” K said.

“Dinosaur,” H agreed.

“A t- rex,” O said specifically. Yes, it was a t- rex, and it was color--

“Red!” We all chorused. We saw trying to put some yellow balls inside the basket--

“Noooo!” We told her. “Red!” We said. So , the same goes for Team Red T- Rex. All the red balls need to go inside the basket.

“No yellow,” K said.

We were then broken off into two teams. The team that has the most ball wins!

“On your mark… get set… GO!” Pauline said, and we all scrambled to put the right balls inside our team’s basket. We counted the balls after the time was up.

For the first round, Team Red T- rex won with 20 balls. Team Yellow Triceratops only had 18 balls. The second round was taken by Team Yellow Triceratops with 18 balls; Team Red T-rex only had 10 balls. It was quite tricky to know which number was the biggest, so Pauline had to draw the balls on the board to help us understand.

After our game, we had snacks, and we went to the park afterwards. We practiced our Petals Class chant as we walked. We were lucky to see Flowers Class at the park, and they brought some ropes with them. Some of us practiced tug- of- war, and some of us pulled our friends as we ran around the green area.

Free play in the morning was quite busy-- we were happy to get to play with our new friend, R! She wanted to play with the doctor set, and we happily obliged. She also wanted to draw, so some of us did some drawings with her. It’s great to see that our Petals Class family is getting bigger!

That’s all for today-- how about you? How was your day?

Love,
All the athletic children in Petals Class
