Face Shapes

Happy Monday everyone! Hope everyone had a lovely weekend and got plenty of rest for another busy week! We started our morning playing with a beading activity and painting a background for our Portraits. In order to beat the heat, we decided to pack our toys away a little earlier than usual, so we could start getting ready for the park before it got too hot. When everyone was ready, we welcomed backed our big sister of Flowers Class, K back to Ohana! She was a little bit shy and quiet this morning because she saw so many unfamiliar faces, but she quickly got to know her new friends and we saw the cheerful and talkative Kano we were used to seeing.

We had a great time playing at the park with our friends and teachers! When we got back to school, many of us needed to change our shirts because we ran so much and sweated so much! Once we were dry and cooled down, we got ready for our snacks and had circle time right after. We sang a few songs and danced “Head Shoulders Knees and Toes” again with our friends. They really enjoyed singing and dancing the song very fast and they kept wanting to go faster! After a short music time, Nimo read us a book, We Are All Alike. We Are All Different by Cheltenham Elementary School Kindergartners. It was a very lovely book about diversity and the pictures were drawn by children who were really close to our age. We looked that the pictures, we looked at the mirror and talked about what we saw.

K: What is “Alike”?

C: It’s like same.

Nimo drew three circles on the white board. The three circles looked like they were all the same, because they were circles, but each one was a different size. The three circles are alike, because they are the same circle, but not exactly the same because of the size.

We opened up the book and saw the first page with lots of pictures of children.

M: This person (in the book) looks like Christopher!

C: My hair is black, the eyes are black, but this person is girl, and has long hair, so she is different.

S: I have black hair, black eyes, and my skin is light!

Y: My hair is black.

Nimo: Who has dark skin?

Z: I do! I don’t stay in the sun so my skin stays the same color.

C: B has dark skin.

Meiya: I never had dark skin, My skin has always been light.

Kano: I want to wear long sleeve shirts outside so my skin doesn’t get darker.

We came across a page that talked about how we all ate different foods, and all had different likes and dislikes.

K: I don’t like Ohagi, it’s mochi with kinako (soybean flour).

M: I love kinako! I don’t like eggs because they’re boring.

K: I like all the stuff!

C: I like all the stuff too, but I don’t like red peppers.

D: I like noodles!

After we finished reading the book, we were handed a small desk that we can sit on the floor with, a big shape made from paper, and a handful of small wooden shapes. Nimo asked us to place the wooden shapes on the paper to make a face. We tried our best to remember what we talked about last week and pieced together our faces. Our teachers took a picture when we were finished so we could about what shapes we used for which part of our faces! After we had our picture taken, we tried changing the facial expressions by changing the shapes of the eyes and the mouth.

Our day today was definitely a Marvelous Monday! Hope everyone else had a wonderful day too! Have a lovely evening everyone and we will see you all again tomorrow!

Love,

Flowers
