Are Flowers Boys or Girls?

We had an amazing circle time today with our friends! We had tons of ideas, we had debates, and in the end we didn’t have a teacher in our circle time. Our circle time started with a quick Flowers Class News Corner where we could report anything we wanted to tell our friends and teachers.

L: Yesterday I went to the park with A, K, and Y, at Step Park we ate lots of cookies!

A: L, R, K, Y and me play at Step Park. We played the “Family Game” We played with K and K too!

K: Today I will play with L-chan!

K: Yesterday when we slide down the hard slide, me and A take off our shoes and socks!

U: Today is funny!

V: I played with A at Step Park and I carry her.

K: I play with A tomorrow!

A: Today I will go to my friend’s house, he’s older than me, I won’t tell you his name because it’s a secret

Our “Question of the Day” was, “Are plants alive”. Nimo asked us if we knew what “alive” meant.

A: Alive means they are not dead

C: They are not dead, they are still here.

U: It can move

V: Can talk

U: Breathing

Nimo: How do you know when something is not alive?

K: You see in the news

V: You can’t move

C: You can see when the flowers are dead, they fall over

Nimo: Is the chair alive?

K: Yes, because we use it

Nimo: Are plants alive?

U: Yes because they can talk.

L: Because oxygen helps the leaves to grow the flower

U: Plants can do what people do, they eat and they drink

K: There is sunlight and water, and everyone say the flower is beautiful

A: Plants can do the same thing as our face

K: If there are so many wind, it will go inside the soil and the rain can help the plant breathe

A: The flower opens. I see when I go to Ohana.

U: Plants have a face, they can breathe

Nimo asked us another question, “Do you think there is a boy flower and a girl flower?”.

A: Flowers are only girls, because they are beautiful.

U: Plants are boys and girls

A: Yes, because flowers can look like a gentlemen or a lady.

A: Pink, red, orange, purple… girl color flowers are girls. If the flower is blue, black, brown, and green, it’s a boy.

C: They are boy and girl, you can tell by the shape. Boys look like circles, and girls are squares.

K: Leaf is the boy, and the flower is the girl.

K: The long leaves are the boy and the short leaves are the girl. The boys are the gentle ones.

U: A flower is a boy if the flower is green and if it’s orange it’s a girl.

Some of our friends were starting to have a debate with each other’s ideas. Nimo brought one of the flowers from the balcony and from there, we didn’t need our teachers anymore. Our teachers stepped out of the circle and our friends took charge. They carefully examined the flower and talked about what they saw and tried to back up what they thought. For a good 15 minutes our teachers just watched from outside the circle as we carried on examining and discussing. In that time, we had a magical moment where we were completely focused on the task and listening to what our friends were saying. We were free to express our ideas in anyway and observe the flower at any angle. At the very end, Nimo came back to quickly wrap things up. We finished with three ideas:

A: All the flowers are boy and girl. The boy leaves have a black line and the girl leaves have all green

K: I agree with A.

A: I can see the flower has lines, these are the boy ones.

K: The flowers are girls and boys are leaves.

U: Boy flowers are green and girl flowers are orange.

We finished up our circle and we voted for some games to play, we voted for Jump Rope and Dodgeball. We had a great time playing games with our friends!

Have a lovely weekend and we will see you again on Monday!
