Daytime and Nighttime

Tuesday turned into such a terrific day! After doing our morning jobs, we had our table activity where we drew things that we could at daytime and nighttime. We can play in the swings, slides, and monkey bars at the park when it is daytime. We can also visit our friends’ houses play with jump rope. On the other hand, when it is nighttime, we just sleep but Ka said that “we can put up a tent and sleep in it at nighttime”.  When we continued talking about daytime and nighttime, we shared our ideas why we think this cycle happens.

Ak: The sun spins around earth. When the sky is orange, the sun goes up and up and it goes around, then to America and spins until morning.

Ke: When the sun is in the middle of all the planets. When the earth is here, Australia is morning.

            Ki: Earth spins around.

            Li: Earth moves by itself.

Ch: When it’s this, night is here, and morning is here.

As we were talking about daytime and nighttime, Vieda placed a round object in the middle of the floor. We thought it was a circle at first. Then we realized that unlike the circle paper that we have for our question of the day, this round object looked so different. This round object must be a 3D shape! Yes, this round object is called a globe and its shape is sphere!

When we saw the globe, Vieda remembered what Ch said about a line that divides the globe in the middle. He thought it was called an “elector”. He was not quite sure, so our teacher looked it up on our iPad. We used our sense of hearing as we carefully listened to the word that C wanted to share with us. Oh, it is called an “eh-kwai-ter”! Ke thought he heard, “EQUILATOR!”.  And talking about the sun, Ke mentioned that “Sun is a basketball. Earth is like a tiny bean. When the earth spins, when the light is close to the earth, it’s daytime. And the other side is nighttime”. Ch added, “Sun is like a watermelon and earth is small and the other planets are bigger than the earth”.

To clearly demonstrate how the cycle of daytime and nighttime occurs, we placed the globe in the middle and kept a flashlight open on one side. Interestingly, the side of the globe that faced the flashlight was bright while the opposite side was dark. The flashlight represented the sun while the globe was the earth. As the earth spins around, countries that are on the side that face the sun will experience daytime, while the opposite side will have nighttime.

SPECIAL SONG FOR OUR MOMS!

We enjoyed singing our special song for our Moms. As we went through the song lyrics, our attention was drawn to how our Mommies tuck us in at nighttime.  Ky shared, “My Mommy hugs me and then sleep”.

Ak Elsa’s Mommy tucks the two girls, too. I watched it on TV.

Ka I wake up at nighttime then I go to sleep again.

Ke: Yes, my Mommy and Daddy tuck me in, and my Aunt.

Li: When I wake up when I’m scared, my daddy gives me hugs. I sleep by myself, but my brother is up.

Ki: (about nighttime) I’m a little scared because the room is dark. I wake up and turn the lights on.

Ky: I sleep, only Ke and Ky. No R, Mommy or Daddy. I turn the lights on.

Ak: When I close my eyes, I see 5 yellow medium circles.

Ka: One time, I sleep with my Mommy and Ut. I close the door, but it opened again, and it was a ghost.

            Ak: Oh no!
Chr: I have a truck light that I can turn on at night.

Li: One time, I close a door and it open and closed again but I think it’s the wind that did it.

 SMALL GROUP ACTIVITIES

We were so happy to be with our small groups again to chat about the life cycles of a rabbit, flamingo and orca. This time, we tried to draw a picture to represent each stage of the life cycle just like what we saw in the penguin’s life cycle. We have just started, and we would love to continue working on them to see our completed life cycles!

 OUR PLANTS

Do you remember the plants that we are growing from food scraps and seeds? We were so surprised to see how the leaves and stalks of the bean sprouts got so long. We tried to measure them, and we got 25cm, 28 cm and 30 cm long, which had all started from no leaves at all. In just a span of one week, it grew so much! We checked our tomato plant and Ak observed that “the leaves are darker now”. Looking over on the plants from seeds, Ke said, “These ones are not growing yet. We need to water it”. Ka checked our carrot and said, “I see roots. Maybe it will grow like a tree!”. A also said, “I see roots and seeds” as she looked at our bean sprouts (toumyo).

We will continue to observe our plants and record the changes that we see each week. We will be very happy to share our observation records with you!

Please have a great evening! See you all again tomorrow!

 Love,

Flowers Class
