Eggs and Penguins
Our five senses have been helping us observe flowers and plants. Sometimes we use more than one sense at a time, but today we used just one of them. And that was our sense of touch. A basket was passed around and each had a turn in guessing what was inside. We used our gentle hands as we touched it from the outside, as well as touched the object itself without looking at it. We paused to have our thinking time. Could it be a bunny? A carrot? A train? A toy block? An orange? A ball? Or a chicken wing? What could it be? Then A said, “I don’t know the name in English but it’s a bird that has a long neck”. At the count of 3, Vieda took out the object that was inside. We chorused, “ Wooooh!”. Ad thinks that it is “such a big and enormous egg!”. And yes, the basket had an ostrich’s egg!
The next egg was a bit smaller. When asked whose animal it belongs to, we said,
Me: I think that egg, a baby chicken comes out of that. The very big egg, the Mommy and Daddy chicken come out of that.
When Ti heard this, he raised his hand and said, “But I think that’s not what happens. The chick, Mommy Chicken and Daddy Chicken all come from little eggs. The Mommy and Daddy Chicken are all chicks before. Then they eat lots of food and then they grow.”. We just love sharing our ideas and being open to other’s thoughts as well.
If all chickens come from eggs, and we came out from our Mommy’s tummy, how about our Mommies? Where do they came from?
Ad: Actually, I have no idea where my Mommy came from!
Ke: My Grandma’s tummy.
Ka: My Grandma was Mommy; my Mommy was baby and my Mommy came from Grandma’s tummy.
Ak: May I ask a question to everyone? What if your Mommy is not here. If your Grandpa and Grandma is not here, what is your family? (There was a long silence. Then Ak answered his own question. He said, “We can still have our Mom and Dad”.
As we talked more about Ak’s question, we realized that what he really meant was, if our Mommy and Daddy were not here and we were born, we could still have a Mom and a Dad but not the ones we have now. Absolutely correct! We will always have a Mom and a Dad, just like the animals! Talking about animal families, we enjoyed playing the guessing game with our friends.
(1) Whose egg does this belong to. (Answer: chicken)
Ke: Crow’s egg
Ti Peacock’s egg
Ch: Pigeon’s egg
(2) How about the people? Did we hatch from eggs?
Ak: NO! People don’t hatch from egg. You get out from a tummy. Somewhere here, down here! (pointing to his tummy)/
(3) What animals hatch from eggs?
Ch: Crocodile!
K: Ladybug!
Ke: Pigeon!
K: Butterfly!
Me: Giraffe!
Ch: Fish!
K: Dolphin!
A: Snake!
Ak: Octopus?!
LEARNING ABOUT PENGUINS
We are so fascinated about penguin. We can waddle like a penguin. We can perhaps draw a penguin. We know exactly what color a penguin is, but we may not know a lot about them. Sharing ideas as we begin on learning about new things is such a great opportunity for us in Flowers to use our imagination. After sharing our ideas, we are going to use different means of resources to verify our ideas and eventually learn the facts about the topic we are currently learning. Please read on to learn our interesting discussion about the penguins.
Ti: I think it’s the Daddy Penguin who lays the egg.
Ke: The Daddy Penguin will hold the little chick.
Ak: The Mom and Dad pick the egg. Put inside where the other penguins cannot see.
K: I think the penguin family is at home. I like to live where the penguins are because I like to play with lots of snow.
Vieda: I wonder where the penguins live?
Me: They live in igloo.
Kei: I think they live in Antarctica.
Ak: Mom has a job, too. That’s picking up all the babies penguins. The Mommy is back and baby is back, too.
Li: Mommy Penguin goes out fishing. Daddy Penguin stays with the penguin egg.
Vieda: What does the Mommy Penguin do with the fish that catches?
Ad: She takes it home. She will just use her mouth.
Ak: I think she will get fish with her mouth. She will go in the ocean and find the egg. Then she will give the egg to the small, small penguin.
Ke: When it pick the fish, Mommy will put the fish between the feet. She will put a bucket inside that she made from snow.
Chr: I think the Mommy Penguin will put the fish she catches in their igloo home.
Ki: I don’t have idea what Mommy Penguin do for fish.
Ly: Maybe Mommy Penguin will cook and eat the fish.
Shelley: If the Mommy fish get so many fish, she can go back to the penguins and share the fish with them or maybe sell it to the shops.
K: But there are no shops there!
Ke: When we were in Flowers before, Liezel was zooming and then we saw a penguin.
Ak: I think Daddy Penguin will look at the egg and check if it’s a good egg or a bad egg.
Welcome to the amazing world of penguins! Our mind was blown away thinking how Daddy and Mommy Penguin work around their family for their baby. We are going to look at some books and video tomorrow to learn about penguins.
If Mommy Penguin lays the egg, does it mean that all Mommy animals lay eggs? Do we have animals that have Daddies that lay eggs? What do you think? Please share your ideas with us tomorrow!
Vieda showed us some vegetables, which made A thought that we were going to cook and make some food for everyone! There were toumyo or pea shoots, carrot, and spring onion. We helped Vieda chopped the top part of the pea shoots before we put it in a container with water. Our teacher chopped the top part of the carrot and spring onion as well and put them in water. There are 3 groups that will look closely at these vegetable scraps and record any changes that we see in them. Please join us on our food scrap journey!
PS: For our morning activities, we were kept busy making something special for someone very close to our hearts! Can you guess what we made and for whom it is for? Please try to make a guess! Also, we all worked together to make our World Book Day poster. Have you decided what book character to come in on Friday? We can’t wait to see you! Please don’t forget to bring your favorite book you got your outfit from, okay!
See you all again tomorrow!
Love,
Flowers
