Post Office and Shadow Puppet Show
Our hands were full as we tried to finish all the artworks that would be on display for tomorrow’s Art Museum Party (that’s what we named our museum!). Someone brought up that we can find a restaurant in a museum. So, what a great idea to make two shops that will make sushi and ice cream available at the museum. We discussed who would take the role of the shop vendors and the customers which went on so smoothly! Of course, we cannot miss making posters for each shop. Ch and K worked so hard in writing the shop names, while Ak, K and Ke drew beautiful photos that will decorate our posters. We are all so looking forward to the “opening” of Art Museum Party tomorrow!
THINGS WE LEARNED ABOUT POST OFFICE IN JAPAN
We are so grateful to Mr. K for being our guest yesterday. We had so much fun listening and joining in the quiz time. We talked about the post office and enjoyed listening to our friends as we shared what we considered highlights of yesterday’s virtual post office visit.
K: Ke talked about post office and give present. Yesterday night, I make dice with my Daddy.
Ad: I think there are 20,000 boxes, one box in Mount Fuji and no post box in the sky.
L: Post card goes in the postcard opening.
K: Then it goes to the post office.
Ak: 49, one big number ….40 red cards and 30 bikes.
K: A big truck that can hold 9 trolleys. (Trolleys) Have boxes of cookies! No, letters!
AThere are different kinds of post boxes. There’s panda.
K: Owl!
K: In Ikebukuro
A: Is it (Ikebukuro) a country?
K: Yes, I go by car.
K: The post boxes in the water are not the same. The color of the bag inside (the post box) is blue and orange.
Ch: Use one key, but not for al the boxes. One key for one post box. Ke speak Japanese and lots of quiz. My favorite is the question which one of here doesn’t have a mailbox.
K: Post office prepare the letters and postcards at 9PM so they can deliver them at 9 AM the next day.
A The bike, we (postman)can put things in front and back. The front is like a bicycle and have a box.
K: When we are sleeping at night, the post people still working. I don’t know where they sleep and when no post office day.
Vieda: How many times in a day do the post office people collect the letters and postcards from the post boxes?
K and Y: Four times!
A: I am going to talk about the machine. The green light is not stopping, when the button is black, it’s no more post. All day the postcards go in one at a time.
Great listening, Flowers class! Listening to all the things that our friends shared from our virtual post office made us realized how well we had their listening ears on yesterday! Way to go!
QUESTION OF THE DAY
Today’s question of the day was. “Is there a post box under the sea?” We read it as a class and as soon as we finished, Keita immediately made a comment, “There are three places!” Wow, so that means there are in fact, post boxes under the sea. Where are these post boxes located?
Ch: Okinawa!
A: I was going to say Okinawa!
T: I went to Okinawa.
There was a long pause as we tried to remember the other two locations. Then, A asked, “Can you give me another letter?” And the hint was, it starts with Waka… Ch was able to guess it quickly. Wakayama! Good job. The last one starts with “Shi”. What could it be? We needed more hints for this.
K: Shinagawa?
Ch: Shinayama?
K: Shizugawa?
Ak Is there an /a/ in it?
(Vieda wrote Shizu_ _ _)
C: (looking at the hints, he guessed) Shizuoka!
Let us see if we remember what about the postcards that we for these under-the-sea-post boxes.
Vieda: Who collects them?
K: Divers!
A: Sounds like drivers.
Vieda: What kind of postcards do we need?
K: In combini, you can buy it.
A: There’s a special one, it doesn’t get wet.
Vieda: What months does the post box in Mount Fuji open?
Y: January and August.
Oh! Quite close! It is open until August but not from January. We got several hints until Y said, “I got it! She wrote /y/ at the end and said, “It’s July!”.
SHADOW PUPPET SHOW
For our story time, we read the story of The Three Little Pigs. We know this story so well that our story time became a fun shared-reading activity. Then, came the biggest surprise! We would have a shadow puppet show. Our teachers made some shadow puppets for us and we took turns to be the puppeteers for the story “The Three Little Pigs”.
We went behind the white blanket as our room was dimmed. We moved our puppets as we recited our lines that we made by ourselves! Not only did the pigs and wolves moved and talked, but also the pigs’ houses! We had so much fun!
What a fun shadow puppet show it was! We would love to do another story for this show next time.
See you all at the opening of our very own, Art Museum Party!
Love,
Flowers Class
