Let's Talk About Our Breasts
Happy Wednesday everyone! We had such a wonderful Wednesday with our friends and teachers. Our busy hands were occupied with mixing and measuring dyed oats, playing with dinosaurs and animals, making crafts with tissue rolls, and drawing as well.
Many thanks to U and N for sharing their book with us today. As we were reading it, we heard an alarm. Although our teachers did not inform us that we were going to have a fire drill, as soon as we heard the alarm, we knew what to do. We put our hands over our nose and mouth and quietly followed our teachers to evacuate. Good job, Flowers!
We had several topics we excitedly talked about at circle time. There was a time that we could not wait to be called before sharing our ideas, so our teacher had to sing, “I’m looking to see who could raise their hands before they say a word”. Please read on to find out our interesting discussion.
STORYTIME (King Arthur’s Very Great Grandson by Kenneth Kraegel)
We love how words sound and we are always thrilled to think of words that have the same beginning sounds. As we were reading the story, we saw letters in huge size. We told Vieda that we know the sounds /Gg/ and /Rr/ and could even come up with words that begin with those sounds.
/Rr/ words
K – R, rocking chair
Be – rabbit
A- earth (yes, we can hear the /r/ sound in the middle)
Ky – Rahhhhh! Monster say it!
M – Ruff!
U – ruler
S – run, rock, scissors, and paper
Ch – rock
U – rocket
/Gg/ words
Be – gum
Me – grapes
U – grandson
So – good
Ch – grandpa
A – gum gum. It’s a candy.
Ra – pointed at the letters on the book
Ee/ words
A - A! (Yes, we can hear the /e/ sound!)
Be – egg
U – elephant
S– apple
Vieda: What is friendship?
U– A friend, a best friend or best friend
Ch – Make more friends
CIRCLE TIME
Today’s calendar helper, Ch mentioned that it’s already October. When it’s October, we remember that it is the time for Halloween. What do we think about when we hear the word Halloween?
Ch: web Ky: pumpkin U: treats and visiting
Ai:costume B: web N witch
M: Only in the US, we do trick or treat, not in Japan.
D: monster A: ghost K: zombie
U: bugs like spiders and cockroaches S: spider web
N: bats Ch: skull S: Una
Ky: zombie bus U good costumes and going to Ohana
We have so many fantastic ideas about Halloween! Few days ago, inspired by the book Soles of our Feet, we painted our own feet. Now that Halloween is coming soon, we would like to put on our creative hats and see how we could turn our painted feet into Halloween-ish things! Please look forward to our creations!
Learning about breasts
We have learned so far that each body part has its own name. To continue what we talked about yesterday, we read the book Breasts by Genichiro Yagyu. At first glance, Ai thought the book cover were two tummies. When he learned that they were breasts, he smiled.
Before we talked about the breasts of human beings, we looked at some pictures of some animals that have breasts as well. We were able to guess to which animals that the breasts belong to. These were the cow, monkey, and elephant.
Ky: I touched elephant at zoo. I touch nose. It’s funny!
No: That’s a trunk.
Un: I touched the head of an elephant before.
Ch: I go to Thailand before, and I ride on elephant.
D: I like it (elephant).
Me: I went to Thailand, and I ride on the back of elephant. It has a red carpet on it.
Then came the time to read our book about breasts. Every page gave us some things to think about. We could not help but to pause and share our thoughts.
U: If you eat more, your breasts get bigger. So, if you’re bigger, then your breasts get bigger. The bigger you get, the bigger your breasts become.
N: My mom wears a bra, but she takes it off when she takes a bath.
Me: My mom wears a bra, too. She uses it when she exercise, then she takes it off when she goes to the bathroom.
D: Baby is sleeping.
So: I’m a girl but no breasts.
U: Breasts need to be big, so the milk can come in.
We learned that when a girl turns about 10 years old, that is when the breasts will begin to fill out. Sumo wrestlers may have big breasts, but they don’t have milk because as N put it, “they are not mommies!”. A very good point that we learned from the book. Women have fuller breasts to make and feed milk to her baby. Even when a woman is not a mommy yet, her breasts are getting ready for the time that she can have a baby. Speaking of the milk that comes out of the breasts, Ch said, “When the baby is in the tummy, they eat with whatever the Mommy eats through a tube”.
Learning about our bodies always takes our curiosity to a high level. Our body is indeed an amazing machine that can make so many wonderful things!
Love,
