What to Wear?

When we had our circle time, our weather reporters R and C looked out our window and came back to report that:

“It’s raining, Miss Pauline,” C said.

“It’s raining,” R agreed. The whole class said that we can’t go to the park today.

“I don’t have my rain boots,” L said.

“I have my rain boots today,” H said.

Pauline asked if it was hot or a little bit cold today.

“A little bit cold,” A replied. She was right- that’s why a lot of our friends are wearing long sleeves today. As we were talking about today’s temperature, we reviewed the different seasons that we talked about with Kai the other day: summer, fall, winter, and spring.

We turned our attention to a picture of a boy and girl on the whiteboard. They were just wearing their underwear and undershirts! Pauline then drew a picture of a …

“Park?” H asked.

“Ohana?” L guessed.

“Zoo?” R said.

“Uh… that’s actually the beach,” Pauline said, shaking her head in amusement. “I guess I need to practice my drawing skills,” she told us. Then, she put the picture of the girl in her “beach” drawing.

“So, it’s summer and it’s very hot. What clothes can we give the girl?” she asked us. H volunteered and she put a dress on the girl. Next, R gave her some rain boots. L thought her feet might get hot and sweaty, so K swapped the rain boots for some sandals.

Next, Pauline erased her drawing of the beach and made a new one. It was:

“Daruma- san!” Some of us said.

“No- snowman!” A said.

“Yes, thank you!” Pauline told her gleefully. “It’s a snowman. So it’s winter…. It’s snowing…. There’s a snowman…. And then we have a boy here!” She put the picture of the boy in her winter drawing. “The boy said, ‘BRRR! I feel so cold!’ What can we do to help him?” Pauline asked. C decided to put a jacket on him, M put some pants on him, and Leo put winter boots on him. A gave him a winter hat, too! Now, he’s covered from head- to- toe and probably feels warm and comfortable.

The next drawing was--

“Mushrooms,” Kai teased. Pauline rolled her eyes and laughed.

“It’s rain!” We told him and we all laughed. Pauline put the picture of the girl again in her rainy day drawing.

“Oh nooo,” she said. “The girl is getting all wet! What can we do to help her?” she asked. A decided to put a pretty dress on her.

“Her dress is getting wet- what can we do?” Pauline asked. C gave her some rain boots. S put a raincoat on her. Yay! Now, the girl won’t get wet! We’re really good at choosing what clothes to wear for any season, or any weather, so Pauline said we can help out our mommies and daddies in the morning to pick out what we want to wear for school.

Since we couldn’t go to the park, we played “The Floor-- is-- LAVAAAAAHH!” (At least that’s how Pauline announced it game show host- style). We had the tactile path on the floor, and we need to do our best to balance on it when the music stops playing. If we lose our balance and fall into lava-- we’re out!

Pauline started playing some nice Halloween music and we danced around the tactile path. The music stopped and we scrambled to balance on top of the paths! It was quite funny because we ended up pushing each other or dragging each other down as we struggled to keep our balance. Pauline kept taking away the tactile paths until there was only 1 left. During the second round of the game, there were no winners as everyone fell in a heap on the floor! It was hilarious!

Other than that, our free play also kept us occupied. We continued to make Halloween decorations with Sayaka, and we enjoyed free drawing at the other table. The back of the room was busy with wooden blocks. After snack time, Sayaka read to us a book called, “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything” by Linda Williams. She was a brave old lady but got the scare of her life while she was walking out in the woods.

All talk of scary things and spooky decorations in the classroom quieted us down a bit, and especially made C’s brows furrow. But our teachers reminded us that it’s okay to feel scared, but we can also be brave! Pauline said when we feel scared, we can sing the “Go Away!” song. She started strumming on her ukulele and we thought of things that spooked us and sang them in the song:

Go away big green monster, go away!

GO AWAY!

Go away big green monster, go away!

GO AWAY!

We changed big green monster to pink monster, then white ghost, black cat, and big shark. The song made us feel happy and it made us smile! We forgot about being scared so we sang the phrase “Go away!” with much gusto!

That’s all for today. We hope that tomorrow the weather will be all better so we can play outside at the park or temple. How about you? How was your day?

Love,

All the brave children in Petals Class
