Bones and Muscles
Happy Monday everyone! Time flies really fast! Am, our calendar helper for today was so surprised that it wasn’t October anymore. She looked at the calendar on the wall and said, “Wow, it’s November now!”. Since we are in November, Vieda asked us if we could think of words that have the same beginning sound as November. Below is the list of words that we came up with:
Ke: Nimo and knees Ak: notebook
Ka: nose and Nanako Yu: no
Ch: Nagoya and natto
When Ka heard the word natto, she said, “ I don’t like natto but I like the taste!”, while Yu mentioned, “I didn’t like it, but when I eat it, I like it!”. It only proves that there are food that we think we don’t like at first, but when once we try it, might actually like it. After talking about our calendar, we turned our attention to our Question of the Day. Li and Ch helped us read it. Today’s question was, “Do all animals have bones inside their body?”. Our friends were confident as they shared their thoughts with the rest of the class.
Ke: Yes, because all people and animals have bones. A long time ago, we were gorillas and monkeys, so we have bones.
Ka: Yes, because animals can walk.
Am: Yes, because they move their bodies so much.
Ak: Yes, because all animals walk and won’t move with no bones.
Li: Yes. All animals and people all day moving so they have bones.
Yu: Yes. When they move on earth, they have bones.
Me: No, because we don’t like bones in animal body.
We heard our friends’ thoughts about the bones in the animals and we could tell that animals have bones. Are they inside or outside of their bodies? That was a big question for us. We asked Vieda for the answer and she replied with a picture! Guess what the picture she showed us? It was a SPIDER! We learned that there are animals such as the spiders that have bones on the outside of their body. Ak’s eyes lit up and said, “What? Spider’s bones outside?” in an incredibly surprised voice! Vieda mentioned while other animals have bones on the inside of their body, some don’t. It would be great to know what other animals have bones outside of their bodies. Can you think of some?
Just as we were talking about spiders, we also learned that unlike us, they have more eyes! Can you guess the number of eyes spiders have?
Speaking about bones, Nimo took out the chicken bones out of the bottles filled with vinegar, soda and bleach. In the morning, we used magnifying glass to look closely to each of the bone. We noticed that the bone dipped in bleach changed to white. The smell each of the bone made was also different based on which bottle it came from. We thought we were able to see all the differences among them until Vieda picked up the bone from the bleach bottle and BROKE it! Wow, the bone broke! On the other hand, when she tried to do the same with the other bones, they did not break. Why? Am said, “Because the calcium is sticking it together. A good point about calcium in our bones. Ka, on the other hand thinks that, “because bleach is so strong Vieda cannot break the bone”. Does it mean bleach can take away the calcium from the bone? How about the vinegar and soda? Does it mean that they can make the bones stronger? There was so much to think about. So, we decided to talk more about it tomorrow. We needed a break, so we all stood up and danced to the tune of Baby Shark (Halloween version).
After the dance, we came back to our circle. We liked how we pretended to be cowboys, ghosts, sharks, and princesses in our dance. Vieda asked us if our bones felt okay, or if we felt some pain. Then, we stretched our arms, touched our backs, and sat different ways but we did not feel any pain at all!
Vieda: We learned that our bones are hard. If they are, how come our bones do not break when we stretch our arms or when we sit or dance?
Ak: Because of calcium?
Am: These bones don’t break, but the bleach bone broke and we don’t have those bones in our body.
Ch: I had a glass piggy bank, but I dropped it and it break.
Yu: These bones are stuck together with calcium.
Ka: Bones help body move.
Me: Ke’s Grandpa’s leg broke. So, the doctors stick it with glue.
Yu: We have muscles!
That is our big word for today ----- MUSCLES! Like our bones, we cannot see these muscles. How do they work? Is there any connection between our bones and our muscles? These are just some of the questions that we will try to answer. For now, Vieda showed us the body model that we made for our bones. She covered it with a red cellophane as our body is covered with muscles.
We got popsicle sticks and stuck them on the bone locations in the body. As we stretched our arms and legs, we observed that although our bones are hard, they do not break when we move them! When Vieda tried to break the popsicle stick, it broke into two pieces! That was so different from our bones. Then, we were given a big rubber band which we stretched back and forth, and it never broke! Ah, this could be like what happens to our bones when we move them. There must be something that works with our bones to accomplish this task of moving without breaking! That is something that we will try to discover this week!
To wrap up our circle time, each of us thought of a word that has the same beginning sound with “muscle”. Here is what we came up with:
Am: Me Yu: muscat Ak: mushroom
Ad: mustache Ke: medal Ka: Mommy
Ki: muscat Ch: Monday Me: Monster Ti: muffin
GYM CLASS
We have been learning how to use the jump rope. Tsurumi Sensei shared some hints so that we could jump over the rope. It was a little challenging to jump over the rope as soon as it hit the floor. We played the spider tug-of-war before we said thank you and goodbye to Tsurumi Sensei. We had so much fun in gym class!
ACTIVITY
We experimented with drawing around a hole while waiting for our turn in gym class. We looked at hole and drew pictures. Some had an idea to make it an astronaut, sun, or a flower! Some of our friends also tried having a different shape for the hole, such as triangle and heart.
A day full of fun has just ended! We cannot wait to see our friends and teachers again tomorrow for another day of fun and learning!
Love,
Flowers Class
