A Sensory fun art day
Day three saw us having fun with a really mushy sensory art activity. This was a part of our large work in progress which already has some interesting designs on it. So far, we used rollers and paintbrushes and handprints and today we added some 3D sculpted shapes of mush. The mush was made from strips of newspaper which we soaked in water and added paint to. Some of us loved doing this activity and some of us didn’t like it at all. For those of us who loved doing it, we particularly enjoyed squeezing the newspaper and mixing it together with water. The second and third stages made it even more mushier because we added some potato starch and paint. The colours that we used today were purple, green and reddish pinkish orange. We mixed these three colours with newspaper in containers. We then took pieces of it, and attached the pieces and shapes to the large painting. This is what it looks like now.
You can see the raised parts which make it look somewhat like craters on the surface of the moon. We put the huge painting outside on the balcony and washed all of our smocks because they were full of paint and shaving cream. You may wonder why we are talking about shaving cream because none of us shave! Well, shaving cream is such a great sensory experience for us. We love the softness of the shaving cream and Liam actually spent almost an hour playing at the table; Riku, Giorgia and Miyu were with him. They made circular shapes on the coloured shaving cream. We had to wash all of our art smocks because they too were covered in shaving cream.
During circle time, we looked at a book, that many of us have at home. When we first joined Ohana International School, we were given the book as a gift. The book has two transparencies in it. One is red and one is green. When you look through them separately, they are transparent, however when you put them together, you cannot see through them at all. When you place them on the pages in the book, you see different things. Sometimes you see words in Japanese, sometimes words in English and sometimes pictures. On the page with the letter “A” there was a picture of an airplane; it had the letters spelling airplane on it; it had letters in the Japanese alphabet
spelling “hikoki” which is the word for airplane in Japanese and it had the letter “A” on it. We chose a few different letters to see what magic the transparent colours would create.
Then we sang a long song all about colours called ‘The Colour Song’. It goes like this:
Mrs. White got a fright in the middle of the night
Saw a ghost eating toast half way up the lamp post.
Mrs. Yellow saw a fellow eating a marshmallow
Mr. Black got a smack, said he wasn’t coming back
Mrs. Green saw the queen on the television screenMr. Blue made a pooh and he couldn’t tie his shoe
Mrs. Brown went to town, with her undies upside down
Mr. Purple saw a turtle, sitting in a big round circle
Mrs. Grey said: “Hooray, please will you come and play”
Mr. Gold was so old and then his house was sold
Mrs. Pink made a stink and then she gave a wink
Mr. Red went to bed, in the morning he was dead!
We loved the song and those of us who had colours on our clothes, that matched the words of the song, stood up and we sang the song again, while pointing to their clothes. We hope that we can sing the song again tomorrow!
Love always Shelley, Hisami, Ayaka and Sayaka.
