Shapes and Spirals
Today we had a lot of fun with colours, 2 Dimensional and 3 Dimensional shapes. On the table we saw the artwork we started yesterday with the food coloring and sparkly gold and silver glue. It had already dried and so we added some sparkly gold, silver, green and red yarn today. To add these to the pictures we firstly chose the color we wanted and put it into the tray with some white glue. Using a brush we made sure the yarn was fully soaked in the glue. Using our fingers we then applied the yarn to our artwork. When it was on the paper it looked white but luckily the glue dries clear. Ethan, Ryan, Noa, Arata and Nile completed their Christmas gift using glitter, pom-poms and colored yarn on the small
table with Ayaka. We all had the chance to use a plastic needle today with the
sparkly yarn to put it through a hole to finish our decoration. These were then put in a gift bag ready for Christmas. The colored blocks on the carpet were very popular today and it was great to see Eito so happy building a castle. He looked very proud of himself and gave a big smile. After clearing away the toys and having snack we got ready for the park and were very lucky to have Nanako read a book titled ‘Night before the Night Before Christmas’ which was really good and told the story of all the things a family had to do to get ready to celebrate Christmas. It was nice and sunny in the park and we had a great time with our friends and siblings from
Buds and Petals classes. When we got back from the classroom we looked at some wooden shapes and
we recognized them as: a square, a circle, a triangle and a rectangle. We then saw a new shape which was a circle on the outside and then a line going round and round towards the middle. Darren told us it was a spiral. In a big box we then saw a 3 Dimensional shape for each of the 2 Dimensional shapes above. We saw that a circle could become a sphere, a cone or a cylinder, a square could become a cube, a triangle could become a 3 sided, a 4 sided pyramid or a triangular block. The rectangle could also become a rectangular block. We then made a
spiral into a 3 Dimensional shape called a helix. This was fun and quite easy for us. All we needed to do was firstly decorate the paper spiral with marker pens or sparkly pens on one side. Then we turned the paper over and carefully cut along the spiral lines. This took us a little while as we had to rotate the paper when cutting and keep the scissors in the same
place. We had to do little snips so we made curved lines. When we had finished cutting we taped a small piece of yarn in the center to hold the spiral with. When we picked up the yarn by the spiral it dropped down into a beautiful shape. Because we had done all the color on the bottom of the paper we could see it spinning above us. We could choose if we wanted to hang our spirals from the ceiling or take them home with us today.
Have a great weekend.
All our love, Darren, Ayaka and Nanako
