Xin Nian Kuai Le!

Xin Nian Kuai Le! Happy Lunar New Year! We had a very special guest come to Petals Class today! We started our morning finishing up our lantern art by sticking small pieces of scrap paper. We had a lot of colors to choose from to make our lanterns very pretty! We played with the played with the toy cars and play dough. We packed away our toys a little earlier than usual to prepare for our special New Year Event! We danced to some songs with the guitar as we took turns going to the restroom. Once everyone went to the toilet, we started our circle time by shouting, “Xin nian kuai le!” We looked at the book, “Bringing in the New Year” again and jogged our memory about Chinese New Year.

Nimo: When is the Lunar New Year?

J: No moon (New moon)

M: Need to clean up!

Nimo: Do you see any new decorations?

S: *Pointed at the new year snake* Snake!

D: Big snake! So big!

Our teachers told us Isa’s mom and dad were going to come to talk to us about how they celebrate their new year and then we were going to watch a very special mask performance done by their friend. We briefly talked about how we should sit and how we show respect to our guests by using our listening ears.

I’s mom S came to Petals Class and showed us where China was and the Chinese flag.

M: I’m from China too!

M: *Nods*

S read us the book, “Peppa’s Chinese New Year”.

S: I like Peppa Pig!

S: What is the lucky color?

I: Red!

S: Can you find something red?

M: Evita’s shirt.

M: Nimo’s shirt too!

I: *Pointed at the clock*

Next, S showed us the a paper craft dragon and a dragon we could put on our heads!

Y: I want to touch!

W: Me! *I want to put it on* Yeah!

P: Me too!

After S’s presentation, we welcomed our mysterious dancer! He turned on the music and used his big fan to dance! Every now and then he put the fan over his face for a split second and when he lowered his fan the mas changed! It was very cool! After the performance we clapped our hands out of excitement and said thank you and farewell to our guests!

We had a short discussion about what we liked about the Mask dance then we went to the Step Park to play!
