Mittens vs. Gloves
Happy Tuesday! We started our winter school day 2 in Flowers by continuing to decorate our holiday cards with magic cutting. We really enjoyed folding and cutting along the lines feeling unsure what the design would look like. The unfolding of the paper made us feel very excited! After the magic cutting, we tried our best to write our messages on the card. Please look forward to receiving your holiday cards from us😊
CIRCLE TIME
We just loved our hot chocolate experiment yesterday. To recap, our friends shared what we did.
S: We wanted to see if the marshmallows will melt in the hot or cold chocolate.
R: S had the tallest one (bottle).
R: (Cold chocolate) didn’t melt the marshmallows.
We talked about our homework yesterday and shared why we thought hot chocolate melted the marshmallows. Unfortunately, we forgot to do our homework, so we listened Vieda shared.
Why did the marshmallows melt? The best part of the science behind it was to act it out! We pretended to be the “molecules” in the hot water. We learned that they have so much energy when in hot water that they move very fast. We ran fast as we could as we pretended to be the molecules. Then “marshmallows” joined us in the hot water while we were running, which spread them out and melted. After this activity, M said, “We are the molecules!”. T asked, “If there’s no more energy, then they move slow?”. Then we remembered what happened to the water when placed in the freezer.
QUESTION of the DAY (Do you know winter animals?)
We have learned the seasons in a year and the changes that we can observe in each of them. Today, we shared what animals we can see during the winter season.
R: Reindeer
K: Deer
R: Rabbit
M: Shiro Kuma
S: I was supposed to say snow leopard.
T: Tiger or the snow leopard.
A: Panda
R: Polar bear
M: Snow leopard
K: Penguin
E: Monster
STORY TIME (The Missing Mitten Mystery by Steven Kellogg)
We continued reading a book that we borrowed from Azabu Library. It’s called The Very Hungry Caterpillar Eats Snacks which is a book about opposites. Our interest was sparked when we saw a warm cherry pie with a scoop of cold ice cream on top. We thought it was a slice of butter on top of the pie!
Z: I eat apple pie.
E: I eat chocolate pie, and I put it on top cake.
M: Ice cream can melt on the outside.
Good ideas! We looked at a book called The Mitten by Jan Brett and had ideas about winter animals. Listening to the story, M raised his hand and said, “I have mittens!” and grabbed his mittens and shared in the circle. M and R also shared their mittens and gloves at school. When asked if mittens and gloves are the same, R replied, “Gloves have all fingers and thumb. Mittens have only one for thumb”.
After an interesting discussion about mittens and winter animals, we played a balloon dance and relay game. We worked as a team and enjoyed dancing with our friends!
Have a lovely evening!
See you tomorrow!
Love,
Flowers XOXO
