What color are our feelings?
Even though the sky was cloudy, our classroom was filled with brilliant hues as we delved into the connection between colors and feelings. Our circle time began with Evita reading The Color Monster, this story is about a little girl helping a confused Color Monster figure out his mixed-up emotions, with each feeling represented by a different color. Petals listened closely to the story and shared their thoughts about the colors and feelings that they saw in the book.
Evita: What did we learn yesterday?
Petals: Sad (red), Scared- green
M: Yucky (orange)
L: Happy (purple)
T: Blue ( surprised)
Evita: What colors do you see in the book?
K: green
M: red, yellow
L: blue
R: Is this rainbow? (referring to the Color Monster) Girl (Color Monster’s friend)
D/: angry ( the girl)
Evita: What colors do you see?

B: blue
D: black
P: yellow
Evita: What is the Color Monster feeling right now?
D: happy
M: yellow
Evita: What do you think they chose yellow for happiness?
L: star
T: banana
K: bee (is yellow like the sun)
Evita: What is the color for happy in Petals?
M: purple!
K/M: blue (sad Color Monster)
Evita: Why do you think they chose blue?
R: because it’s rainy
L: No! ( when asked if likes it when it’s raining)
K: fish
Petals: Red! (anger)
D: Yellow ( Petals’ color for anger)
T: splash! splash! ( pointing out the paint the Color Monster splattered when he was feeling angry)
R: Angry!
E: Look! Ghost!
T: whooo…
R: black (Color Monster)
L: green ( Petal’s color for scared)
T: My daddy is scary( when he pretends to be a dinosaur/dragon)
L: I’m afraid of bees when they sting me
E: I’m scared of spiders
D: Monsters
R: Oni
K: Shinkansen (because they are too fast)
P: Dragon
K: Green ( calm/quiet)
T: Flowers
K: pink!
R: happy ( when asked what they think the Color Monster is feeling)
After our discussion. Evita asked the class, How are they feeling today? Then she encouraged the class to create their own “ Color Monster” using paint. Each expressed their feelings through colors. Whether it was bright yellow for happiness, blue for sadness or a mix of hues for those complex feelings.

By the end of the day, our classroom was filled with beautiful colored monsters!
