Movies and Tanabata

Welcome to our 4th week of summer school. This week, we will be focusing on drama and movie—making with teachers Vieda and Cameron.  A warm welcome (back! As she had joined our summer school in the past) to our friend, N who is joining this week.  We hope to build lots and lots of fun memories this summer!

We’d love to know more about N, so we had a short Q and A for her.

Ri: What is your number (how old are you?)?

                N: Four and a half.

                H: Where do you go?

                N: Montessori School

M: How do you go to the park?

                N: I walk.

MORNING ACTIVITIES

G, E, and Ty were so engrossed in working on the language building lotto board. They tried their best to place the objects in their corresponding board. Later, H was so excited when she realized that the pair of glasses from the lotto board could in fact, fit the baby doll perfectly! On the other table, Wi and Th were quite serious in completing our 2 wooden alphabet puzzles. Once done, they proudly showed them to their teachers and friends!

For today’s table activities, we made a craft using toilet tissue rolls. We painted them and then enjoyed a cutting activity. What could it be? Some of our friends were able to figure it out when they saw the paper! N and K chorused, “We’re done!”. As we moved into circle time discussion, we learned that our crafts will be in celebration of Tanabata. What is Tanabata?

Mi You have to write when you grow up for Nishimachi.

Re: We find something like a tree. When you grow up, something you wanna want to do.

CIRCLE TIME

We continued our discussion about our Tanabata craft in our circle time. Last week, we learned about different 3D shapes and their difference with 2D shapes.  Vieda showed us the toiled tissue roll and asked, “What do you call this shape? Is it 3D or 2D?” Mi thought it was a circle, while Ri said it was an oval circle. T looked at it closely and then said, “That’s a “paparissa”. E raised his hand and said, “That’s a cylinder! I learned it from TV!”. Good job, E! We tried to roll the tissue rolls to our friends sitting in the circle. It may not go directly to our friend we had in mind; it was such a fun activity!

QUESTION OF THE DAY (Do you like movies?)

We listened to our friends who shared their thoughts as to why they said yes.

M Because I have a lot of movie cards in my home.

                R: Because it’s fun.

K Because movies are fun and I can watch and I eat popcorn.

R: Because I see movies are fun.

N: Because they are so fun!
W: Because I can to daddy’s room and watch movies when we are in Taiwan.

E: Because I can watch a dinosaur movie.

K: Because I can go to Disneyland.

Our friends who said no:

Ri: Because movies are not fun.

T: Because movies are so long!

We are grateful for the opportunity to share our thoughts and be able to talk about them despite the differences. Before moving forward in our discussion, we tried to define what a movie is.

                N: It’s like a show!

                Sh: A video

Ka: Shows with people on the stage, but movies are you can watch from home. On the stage people can sing songs. A show is what you sing, but a movie is on.

*How often should we watch? *

N: One time and a different day you don’t watch it.

M: It’s not good on your eyes. It’s not good to watch movies at nighttime.

K: If you don’t sleep, something goes here (pointed under her eyes).

T: They have one of those sleeping bags that cover your eyes.

Gr: I watch TV and my eyes were not ouchie.

We had quite a long chat about the relationship between the length of movies and its effect on our sleep. We are proud of Flowers who seem to be aware of some guidelines to make sure that watching movies won’t negatively impact our health.

How about if we make our own movie? When Cl saw the book. I Love My White Shoes, he immediately sang, “I love my white shoes!”. For our homework tomorrow, we will share our ideas on how to turn the story book (I Love My White Shoes) into a movie. We can’t wait to hear your ideas!

Have a lovely evening!

Love,

Flowers XOXO
