How to Make a Book
Happy Wednesday! We have been enjoying our final week of summer school!
MORNING ACTIVITIES
We continued with our book making process. Yesterday we completed the artwork for our front covers, and today, we are creating the inside pages that tell our stories! The process is the same as the cover, we are drawing first with pencil, then going over it with black marker, before giving it a wash with watercolors! Our pages are coming together well, and our stories now have pictures to go with them! We’ll continue to work on them tomorrow, in hopes that they will be completed by Friday.
CIRCLE TIME
We began today’s circle time with Ka sharing photos and stories about her recent trip!
Ka: When I was in Bali, I ride an elephant in the river. I was riding this one! That’s my mommy, and my sister is riding the bigger one. Sometimes the baby elephant goes into the water, so you need a swimsuit. I went to this place first, a restaurant. It has Japanese food, like ebi senbei, but not so many. We went to so many places like water ride. The water was cold and there was a black tunnel, and inside I couldn’t see anything!
Let’s ask Ka some questions!
Re: Why was you going there?
Ka: Because daddy said we can ride an elephant. At first, I was scared, of course, but not that scared because there was a seat.
Mi: How do you go to the restaurant?
Ka: That’s easy! You just go here and then back here is the door.
Ty: Do you go to the supermarket?
Ka: Nah! I didn’t go to the supermarket.
Hi: You take pictures with the elephant?
Ka: Yes, because somebody said, “I can take your picture.”
Cl: Happy?
Ka: Yes!
Ka: There was a place, I don’t remember the name, where you can go on the river. It’s a river and our foot were wet, and you can buy something. Er can’t go there until 5.
Th: Ma was sleeping?
Ka: Ma is not here! She was at grandma’s.
It sounded like Ka had a lot of fun in Bali! We thought it must be so exciting to ride an elephant. We compared it to other things we have ridden in the past.
Hi: I rode a horse with my dad!
Sh: I rode a horse before! But I wasn’t big enough to ride the camel…Maybe I’m big enough now!
Mi: One time, I drive a horse! It was really big!
Th: Last time, there was a horse race and I rode a horse.
QUESTION OF THE DAY
Re and Hi helped us read the question of the day.
Re: Can you make a book?
Hi: Do you know how a book is made?
Hi: Paper is made from trees!
We all know that paper comes from trees, but how does it work? We looked at a book that explained a bit of the process. We could see a person cutting down a tree and then the tree going…
Th: In a machine!
We could see the tree being cut into small pieces and then mixed until it looked like white soup.
Wi: They use fire too!
Then they spread the white stuff out and made it flat. Then it turned into paper. Hi told us that making a book was simple after that, “We just need to cut the paper, draw the pictures, write the words, and glue it with hot glue.”
We will soon be ready to stick the pages of our books together!
Then we learned what the different parts of a book are called. No helped us know about the “front cover”, which means that the other side must be called the…
Ri: Back cover!
After a while spent in deep thought, Ka realized that the other side of the book is called, “the spine!”
HOT SEAT
With the extremely hot weather as of late, we thought it would be fitting to play a game called Hot Seat! The person in the “hot seat” needs to guess the thing on a flashcard by receiving hints from everyone else. First up in the hot seat, Hi! Let’s play!
Mi: It has wings. Orange wings!
Hi: And it’s black.
Mi: It starts with “B”
Hi: A bird? A butterfly?
It’s a butterfly! Great job! Next up, Mi!
Re: It’s long, and up is a cirlce, and it’s orange.
Th: It’s tall, have a circle, red and orange, and protects from the rain.
Mi: An umbrella?
Correct! Great job! Next up, Hi!
No: It’s green.
Mi: It’s a rectangle.
Ri: It has bubbles.
Th: It starts with “S”
Ka: You can make your hands clean.
Hi: Soap!
That’s right! Last round…No!
Re: It starts with “H”
Hi: On top and down there is bread.
Wi: My daddy likes to eat it!
Mi: It has a circle on the top.
Re: It has bread on top and bottom.
No: A sandwich?
Mi: It has cheese inside.
Ka: And veggies!
Ri: It has tomatoes.
Mi: Sometimes daddy orders it at night.
Th: It’s in Macdonald’s.
No: Hamburger!
Right! It was a hamburger! We are all great at giving hints!
Have a wonderful evening! See you all tomorrow morning!
