Making A Cloud

Happy Wednesday! It has been a very fun day in Flowers Class!

MORNING ACTIVITIES

We continued working on our self-portraits that we drew on newspaper and then glued to a very colorful collage of tissue paper. We also finished our Halloween themed living vs non-living craft of scarecrows, spiders, and bats!

DANCE PRACTICE

Maryna visited our class again today for a short dance practice. We ran through all the songs that we will perform during our Halloween party at the end of the month. There’s only a week and a half left to practice, but we are starting to get the moves down well! We really love the songs that Maryna has chosen for us, and we enjoy the choreography too!

PARK TIME

After dancing with Maryna, we quickly prepared to go to the park. But once we got to Step Park, we kept walking! At first we thought that we were just going to use the entrance at the top of the hill, but we passed by that too! Then we realized that we were going to a different park today. Many of us asked if we were going to Robot Park, but we were not.

Today, for the first time this year, we went to Arisugawa Park! It was much further away than Step Park, but it wasn’t a challenge for us! Our park leaders Th and Ta walked fast, and everyone else kept pace. Once at the park, we collected leaves, sticks, acorns, and other interesting things that we can later use for an art project.

We enjoyed going to a different park today! We proved that we a capable of walking far distances and that means we have more variety to choose from for our daily outing.

CIRCLE TIME

We sat down in front of a table which had the two bowls of water we used for our experiment yesterday. Alongside them were another cup of water, some pipettes, a jar of something, and a can of something else. We began by reviewing what we used the two bowls of water to explain yesterday.

Au: Evaporation! When water’s on the beach, the sun heats up the water, and the water goes up.

Ei: It goes up!

Ty: It becomes air. Water goes up high!

What happens when a lot of water goes up high in the air?

Mi: When the water goes up, the rain is going to come down.

Th: When it all warms up, it goes to the clouds, and then it changes to rain.

We learned that clouds are made of the evaporated water that goes in the air. We looked at the plastic wrap on the two bowls of water from yesterday again. Yesterday, we mostly saw lots of little beads of water clinging to the plastic, but today, we saw big drops of water!

Sh pointed out that those big drops of water are like clouds! We took the wrap off the bowls and the drops began to fall back into the bowl of water, just like it was raining!

Unfortunately, it was a little difficult to see, so we made our own cloud to see the process again!

SCIENCE EXPERIMENT

The can on the table was recognized right away!

Ar: That’s shaving cream!

Au: It’s something you put on your face, and you wait for one minute and it will make clouds on your face!

This was going to be our cloud! We sprayed a lot of it onto the bowl of water and made a big cloud!

We put the jar of something into the cup of water, and the water turned green! We used the pipettes to add green water to the cloud drop by drop. As we added the water, the cloud began to turn green, but it hadn’t rained yet. We took turns adding more and more water to the cloud until finally, it started to rain! We could see the green drops of water falling to the bottom of the cup. It really looked like it was raining!

This helped us to understand that clouds fill with more and more water until there is so much, that it forms raindrops that fall back to earth!

HOMEWORK

Now that we know how rain works, let’s take it one step further. What if those clouds that are full of water happen to fall over a very cold place? What might happen then?

Ar: Rain comes out.

Sh: Snow! Like in my birthday.

Will snow fall? Will rain fall? We’ll find out more tomorrow!

Have a wonderful evening!

Love,

Flowers Class XOXO
