Same Same But Different
We started our morning playing with the dinosaur toys and the Duplo blocks! We also did some drawing and coloring! Sayaka noticed we were enjoying coloring so she printed out some flags for us to color in! There were some flags we recognized and so many we still have yet to learn about! Nimo played his guitar and we sang along as we kept playing with our toys! We packed away our toys, had our snacks and got ready for the park!
Nimo read us the book, “Same, Same, but Different” By Jenny Sue Kostecki-shaw . The book was about a boy who lived in India and another boy who lived in the US. They wrote letters to each other about where they live! We took a look at the two boys, Elliot and Kailash.
R: That boy’s eye is blue.
E: (Kailash) His eyes are black.
T: (Kailash) Hair is black.
R: (Elliot) Hair is yellow.
J: (Elliot) Skin is red.
G: (Kailash) His skin is brown.
T: They are buddies!
Nimo: They are both have eyes, hair, and skin, but they are different colors. Can they still be friends?
G: Yes!
In the book Elliot has four people living in his house. Elliot, mom, dad, and his baby sister. Kailash has 23 people living in the same house!
Nimo: Who has 23 people living in your house!?
T: Me!
Nimo: Who do you have?
T: Mommy, daddy, me, F-chan, … , my sister. I think I have just 4.
R: Me too! I have four, me, mommy, daddy, and baby sister.
G: Me too! Me, daddy, mommy, and baby.
J: I have mommy, daddy, me, and sister.
S: Me too! Four, sister!
K: I have one…
Nimo: Only Kotaro at home? No mommy daddy?
K: Oh no, I have three.
R: I have me, S, mommy, K, M, and L.
A: Four!
P: Five.
L: Me, three!
We decided to take a break from the book and go to the park! We had a lovely time together with Flowers Class! When we got back to school we finished the book. The pictures helped us see that the two boys live in very different places, but there are lots of things that are the same!
E: I saw a school bus in the book, but Kailash didn’t have a school bus.
R: I go to new school, no school bus.
S: I go to new school too, I have bus.
J: My sister rides a bus.
We looked at our world map again and reviewed the flags we posted on it. Today, we were going to put our faces next to the flags we are from.
T: Why some friends have two?
Great question Theo! Together we talked about how our moms and dads can come from different countries. Some of our friends’ parents come from the same country so they only have one flag.
Nimo: Where are you from?
K: Uk and Japan
S: Japan!
J: Korea
L: Me too Korea!
R: J from China, mommy from…Korea? Oh Japan!
G: America with T!
E: I’m from Japan.
T: America, I think my mommy is from Australia… Japan?
We had a lot of fun learning about where we come from! It made us really excited to learn more about other countries! Please sign up for International Month!
Thank you for another terrific Thursday! Rest well and see you all on Friday!
Love,
Petals Class
