A Day with Two Pilots
We have been talking about different professions with the help of story books and puzzles. It is always great to see pictures and play with toys that help us learn more about different professions. Recently, we read books about airplanes and pilots and had many questions about them. As today’s question of the day showed, most of us have not met a pilot yet. We like getting on plane rides, but we never got the chance to meet a pilot! And today, we met not just one pilot, but TWO! We are so lucky!
Our teachers set up our classroom for a zoom meeting. We thought it was the May birthday party celebration, but it was not. The meeting was also set where we would be staying near the main door. Hmm, we wondered who our guest/s could be on zoom today. Nimo let our guest joined our zoom but with no video! Then our guest greeted us, “Good morning!” and Sh said, “My mom!”. When the screen showed her face, Z said, “She’s A!”. Ky immediately asked Aileen, “Are you going to talk about pilots?”. When she said yes, we all cheered, “Yay!”.
A showed us many lovely photos of different kinds of planes. We got so excited to see her as the pilot of fighter jet and passenger plane! Wow, our book was right! Girls can be pilots, too! In fact, in one of the photos, A had a big tummy because she had a baby inside😊
As the presentation went along, we had the opportunity to look a careful look at the planes and tried to spot the differences. We learned how a plane flies and some of the parts of a plane. A gave us airplanes and moved them in sideways when she talked about how airplanes move. They do not move like cars because they move sideways! It was so much fun moving our airplanes sideways. For a moment, we felt we were all pilots driving them! We found it interesting to hear that there’s a kind of airplane that takes care of sick people.
A: Why do you think we have planes that take care of sick people?
K: Because sometimes the road is bumpy and can’t go to high places.
A: The tires spin and go fast and up!
B: The ambulance airplane has a door so people riding won’t get sick.
We learned that the plane for medical rescue helps sick people especially when there are no nearby hospitals. Its fast speed helps a lot in making sure the sick people are transported quickly to a hospital.
On the other hand, we took a careful look at a photo of A wearing a green (military) uniform. We noticed that she was wearing a helmet and a pair of pants that had pockets on her thighs. She replied, “These pockets are where we put the maps in”. Ky raised his hand and asked, “Why Sh’s daddy do pilot? to which A replied, “Maybe you can ask him when you get the chance to see him!”. We tried calling him by saying, “Captain W!”, and then somebody came in the door! Sh said, “That’s my dad!”. We were so thrilled him having him in Flowers. We could not believe our eyes that we would be able to meet and talk to a pilot😊 Thank you so much for coming to see us! Please read on to find out all the interesting things we talked about.
Captain W showed us a what his office looks like. We were amazed to see so many buttons in his office (cockpit)! He said that he cannot press all of them, so he has someone who helps him called a co-pilot. We were surprised to hear that there are always two pilots in a flight for safety reasons. When we think of airplanes, pilots are the only ones that come to mind. We are thankful that Captain W introduced us to other professions or jobs that make our plane rides safety.
B: My mom used to work as a flight attendant.
K: Flight attendants give us food and drinks inside the plane.
Then, we learned that flight attendants play a major role in keeping the passengers safe. They are like the “police officers” on the plane.
A: In the plane, you have to button your seat belt. If not, you’re gonna fall.
K: If you don’t keep your seat belt on, you might bump your head and hurt yourself.
B: If you didn’t keep your seat belt, you might fly.
Z: There’s also a bus driver.
That’s right! The one that takes the passengers to the airplane. Here are the other workers who work at the airport and airplanes that help flights safe and fun!
Engineer – fixes any trouble that the plane has
Check in agents – takes care of the passenger’s tickets and bags
Air traffic controller – pilots talk to them to avoid airplanes from bumping with each other
Suddenly, Captain W took out a small bag. When one of our friends opened the bag, tada! There was a headphone that has big plugs! We learned that it is the tool that pilots use to communicate. Some of us who wanted to try them on put our hands up and we so thrilled to pretend like pilots😊 Then, K remembered his question for Captain W. He asked, “Why do you want to do pilot?” He replied, “I grew up near an airbase. I enjoy working as a pilot!”.
Thank you so much for teaching us so many things about airplanes and pilots, A, and Captain W! We had so much fun learning so many things about airplanes and pilots. We love the airplane model and stickers that you gave us😊 Thank you so much again!
