A Thousand and Four Eggshell Pieces of Humpty Dumpty
Adding Colors to Colorless Flowers + Cracking Egg Shells
Yesterday’s activity of adding colors to geometrically drawn flowers were such a hit with our older friends that did a part two of it together with Nanako. R and H took note of the strokes they made while coloring. W, on the other hand, enjoyed identifying the colors he used.
The other half of the table had trays of painted eggshells which we worked on yesterday. If yesterday’s task was to be careful in painting so as not to crack it, this morning was the complete opposite! We were asked to press on it using our fingers with force… crrrraaack! Oops! It broke into lots of tiny pieces.
With a tray full of broken eggshells, here’s what we did:
1. P, J, and K used toy diggers to scoop the eggshells and transport it from one point to another. It was interesting to note how particular they are in making sure that the shells would not fall through the holes and spaces of the digger.
2. L covered a potted plant with eggshells and stuck a straw through it! It looked like she was enjoying a nice fancy summer drink with a garnish!
Newspaper Insects
Together with Liezel and a lot of creativity & imagination, we formed and replicated insects using newspaper and fuzzy wires. J and K had a blast doing pretend play with it… making corresponding sounds according to the insect they were playing with.
To replicate the movement of worms squiggling through the soil, we were tasked to insert fuzzy wires through straws. E, S, and J used heir super sharp focus when doing this task as it requires using strong hand-eye coordination. C thought of using the fuzzy wire as a way to gently brush her cheeks… like applying make-up!
Nature Sensory Bins
Bins filled with branches, rocks, and old colorful tissue paper were available for us to play with. E thought of banging rocks together to make a beat to accompany the song that was playing in the background.
And of course, we always enjoy “cooking”! Hence, we made lots of “organic” dishes using only the freshest produce of the season! Fancy a bowl of cold colorful summer stone soup?
Aside from all the creativity and music produced, lots of opportunities to strengthen our communication and social skills came up. With guidance from our teachers, we are getting better at compromising, negotiating, taking turns, and respecting each other’s needs and wants.
I’m Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee 🐝
To celebrate the season of spring, we were introduced a new song entitled “Baby Bumblebee” by the Cedarmont Kids. The rhythm of the song was easy to follow hence we changed its lyrics to do our morning roll call. While doing so, the newspaper butterfly that we made during Free Play period was fluttering over us and rested on our head when we were called.
A Thousand and Four Eggshell Pieces of Humpty Dumpty
The broken eggshells during Free Play became our topic of discussion during Circle Time. We recalled one of the stories read to us during our last theme’s focus on food… “After the Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again” by Dan Santat. Since most of us are becoming a whole lot more active and adventurous in climbing and jumping off from high places, this book was a great way for us to increase our awareness of being careful when doing such stunts.
When asked how many broken pieces of Humpty Dumpty might have been used to put him back together again… J confidently answered, “One thousand….four!” Wow! A thousand and four broken eggshell pieces! Now that’s a lot of pieces to put back together.
Just by looking at its illustrations, we were asked to narrate the story. Here’s how the story went based on our perspective:
“Humpty Dumpty was not careful when climbing up a high wall. He fell down and had a bad ouchie and had to go to the hospital. He could not reach his favorite Carl’s that were placed on the top most shelf in the store because he was afraid of climbing.
Humpty Dumpty made a special bird like paper plane and flew it up in the air… but uh oh, it flew all the way high up, landing on the other side of the high wall! Humpty Dumpty was shaking and scared while climbing up the wall to get his paper plane back. When he reached the top, he felt happy and suddenly cracked and “opened” into a beautiful bird!”
Humpty Dumpty’s story of getting back his self confidence in climbing is inspiring!
A Walk Around the Neighborhood
Walking around the neighborhood feels like a breath of fresh air with the humid weather. We followed a different route with lots of uphills and downhills along Uchida-Zaka road. J and H recognized this route as their siblings studied in the nearby schools. R shared that she went trick or treating in the area during last year’s Halloween!
It was a long and rather tiring walk that we all ate our lunch heartily and had a good nap.
We hope all of you are having a lovely Wednesday so far!
Love,
Buds Class Children
