Our Lungs

Wow, we can’t believe how cold it got over night! Most of us came into the classroom with sweaters and vests. We looked around the classroom and saw playdough on one of the tables, ocean creature toys at the play area and an art activity on the other table. We first sat down at the art table before we went and played with the playdough and sea creatures. Our popstick people were dried and ready for a home! We used markers and colored pencils to draw a nice home for them. We then took our houses to Nimo and he helped us use the hot glue to stick our people on the paper. After our crafts were done we had a great time making snails and snowmen with the table and swimming along with the shark and fish toys. Before we packed away for snack time a lot of our friends wanted Sayaka to read us a book. Today she read, “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Bogey” by Timothy Knapman and Tom Knight. It was silly story about a naughty bogey that crashed into the homes of some famous stories like Cinderella. It was a perfect book to read because it is starting to get chilly and our noses are starting to run like a leaky faucet. The book reminded us how dirty the bogey in our nose can be and we need to make sure to neatly blow them into a tissue, not on our sleeves or put them in our mouths.

After our snack time we gathered into a circle and had a short music time. We then sat in a circle to talk more about choking. We briefly talked about choking yesterday, but it’s not very easy to understand because we can’t see inside of our body. Nimo showed us a picture of our respiratory system. We have a tube that goes down and gives air to our two lungs. We tried breathing in and noticed our chest got bigger. Nimo brought a tube, and two plastic bags, the tube was our trachea and the two bags were our lungs. When Nimo blew air into the bags it got big, when we breathe out or take the air out of the bags, the bags were flat.

T: The air is gone

C: The question is,  the lungs go in and try and get out of the chest and they go into the water.

E: (When the air doesn’t get into the lungs) Choking.

To make things more visual Nimo got a few chips and started putting them into the tube. The chip went down the tube and went into the bag. The chips were the air and so long as the tube was open air could go down to our lungs without a problem. We each got a chip and dropped it down the tube straight to the lungs. Nimo put a big chunk of playdough into the tube and it got stuck in the middle. We each got another chip and dropped it in the tube. The playdough was in the way and the chip couldn’t make it into the bag. Nimo told us this is what happens when we choke, something gets stuck in our neck and the air can’t make it to our lungs.

E: The playdough is blocking it.

R: Oh no hospital

It is very dangerous if we choke so we have to be careful. Just in case it happens we practiced doing the universal sign for choking.

We did a great job listening and participating in circle time, next was our gym class! We had a ton of fun exercising and playing games. Today we played a new game called the “Banana-nana” game. It is a tag game that we can play in the classroom. Because we are indoors, we can’t run, so instead we sit down and scoot around the classroom on our bums. It was a very exciting game that really used our whole body. We all were quite tired afterwards so to finish up we practiced falling down on the green mat again.

Before we went home we visited Buds Class and did a surprise birthday party for Shelley! She is now 6 years old! Happy birthday Shelley!

Thank you everyone for another wonderful week, have a great weekend and we will see you again next week!

Love,

Petals
