Happy Birthday, R!

Invisible Sticky Strips

As part of our school’s effort to practice sustainability, we have been repurposing a lot of old art pieces as means to discover and learn something new. Last Friday, we walked on a sheet of bubble wrap to spread orange & black paint. The painted sheet of bubble wrap was left to dry over the weekend and it managed to produce strips of “sticky” substance on it (our teachers added strips on transparent soft laminate).  For us to be able to “really” feel the sticky substance, we had to first peel off the white protective seal which required coordination of both our hands and eyes.

S thought of connecting both ends of the white protective seal to see if it would stick together.

J, L , and E kept their “sticky” awareness of alert as the transparent strips were quite a challenge to spot as they avoided having their hands & arms stuck to it. The three of them also stuck assorted black paper cutouts of the sticky strip that resembled blacks bats & spiders.

What Halloween Creatures Are We Creating?

This activity was catered to the older members of the class to stimulate their creativity and strengthen their reasoning skills. The past work we did on parallel painting with Nanako was going to be reimagined as “Halloween Silly Creatures”. With just a piece of painted paper cut in an unidentifiable shape, Erika facilitated how J, W, and E created their Halloween Creatures by asking questions on why they chose a certain color or how they decided to arrange the facial parts.

It was a wonderful exchange of ideas that even the younger one came by to listen and observe.

Humpty Dumpty and the Great Wall

Dan Santat’s “Humpty Dumpty: After the Fall” is a story that we somehow can relate to. Each time we accidentally trip, fall or make a mistake, we are given the opportunity to stand back up by ourselves with encouragement.

There were several steps needed to be done for this station. With Goh San facilitating here’s what we were able to do:

  1. Draw lines on brown paper to resemble the brick wall

  2. Combine two halves of an oval to complete Humpty Dumpty

  3. Stick eyes and draw its mouth

K and S spent most of their time sticking eyes and drawing lines whereas N found taking off and putting on the pen’s cap fascinating.

Happy Birthday, R!

R’s Likebook was brought out for us to look together as a class. It was wonderful to see how R grew from being a baby to a toddler. We were able to identify who were the members of his family which consisted of his older brother C, his mom C, and his dad M… who happened to drop by our class today to read us a story in celebration of R’s birthday today! We were pretty stunned to see that R’s dad, who we just saw in his Lifebook, is actually in our room!

M read to us “Harry: The Dirty Dog” by Gene Zion and sang with us a “Happy Birthday” song to our dear friend R. We presented R with a special birthday card with our pictures on it and Seila presented him with a playdough cake wherein he got to blow two candles to symbolize his age.

Out to the Temple

The weather was perfect for a morning stroll around the neighborhood and the temple grounds. We ran around the Gingko Tree and picked up some of its “fruit” and watched it roll around the ground.

S and L were fascinated with their shadows. K found it interesting to roll gingko fruits under her shoe.

We hope everyone is having a lovely Tuesday so far.

Love,

Buds Class Children
