Ohana is Family, too!
We are thankful for the cloudy day today. We thought that it would be a brilliant idea to walk and spend our park time at Kogai Park. On our way to the park, we asked, “Do you think there is still a slide there?’, “Can we still go and play on the zipline?”. Then Au looked a bit puzzled and said, “Park?”. Oh, because this was the first time for him to go to Kogai Park with us.
As soon as our park leaders said, “1, 2, 3, go!”, we excitedly ran towards the playground. We had so much fun playing in the jungle gym, slide and the zip line. It always feels good to move our bodies as we enjoy different play equipment. We walked on a balance beam and had lots of fun even when we accidentally fell off the beam😊 Zip line gave us a cool breeze as we swung from one side to another! On the long slide, we laughed so hard when we tried sliding with our friends but could not get the timing to slide at the same time! We had such a wonderful time at the park. We made sure to sanitize our hands just before we headed back to Ohana. When we got back to school, we decided to gather for circle time first, then had our snack and lunch time.
MORNING ACTIVITIES
We saw some interesting and colorful counters on the table. We picked them one by one and closely looked at them. We asked among ourselves, “What is this?”. Then Be picked two different kinds but of the same color. She stared at them for a moment before putting them in the tray. She went to Vieda and asked, “Look! These two are different. I think this one looks like a dog. The body is different from this one”. Vieda then replied, “I wonder why their bodies look different.”. With a smile, she confidently said, “Oh! It is different because it doesn’t look like us!”. K took several pieces and laid them nicely on the tray and shared, “I know now! This is like a family!” Yes, indeed these are our family counters. We can truly say that brilliant minds are constantly at work in Flowers!
On another table, Ka, K, and Ch were busy working on our September birthday celebrants’ cards. Za came to the table and asked, “What are you doing?”. We tried to cover the cards because one of them is for Za! When we told her that it’s a surprise, she smiled and said, “But I already see it!”. Oops!
We enjoyed building towers, cars, and houses with building blocks as well.
CIRCLE TIME
With words, we can share our feelings to others. We can say, “I’m happy!” or “I’m excited today!”, There are also times when we find it a little challenging to express our feelings with words. Today, we tried to express our feelings by making our own face. We chose what face parts to put on the face that would demonstrate our feelings. We checked if our friends could guess what feeling we wanted to convey, too. Please find below how our conversation went:
(For Ka’s face)
Ch: Happy?
Ka: No. Hint is when you eat something.
Ch: Hungry!
Za: I feel hungry now!
(For Za’s face)
Ch: Hungry?
Ka, Be, and Au: Happy?
Za: It’s angry!
(For Ch’s face)
Ka: Happy?
Au: Happy!
Be: Sad?
Za: Thinking?
Ka: Angry?
Chr: Hungry!
(For K’s face)
Ka: Happy?
Be: Sad?
Ch: Hungry?
Za: Excited!
(For Au’ face)
Ch: Angry?
Au: Au is happy. Daddy, Au and Mommy. Tota, pocha. Waiyou (clapped his hands).
For Be’s face)
Au: Happy!
(For Ra’s face)
Ra picked the face parts and neatly placed them on the face. When he was done, he pointed at the face that he made. His work was amazing! We are so proud of you, Ra!
Ka: Happy!
Feelings can be different from one child to another. It is okay to have feelings which are different from our friends. It is also okay to have different feeling from time to time. The important thing is that we know how to acknowledge and express them and as well as respect other’s feelings.
QUESTION OF THE DAY
Can you tell us what color you like? The older group of Flowers’ friends were able to easily read through the question. Wow, everyone answered YES! So, at circle time, Vieda passed around a tray of family counters and asked us to pick one that corresponds to the color we like. Then we line up all the counters that we picked. K commented, “Wow that looks like a family”.
By the way, what is a family?
Ka: Family is like mom, dad, and me.
K: Baby and baby sister
Za: Mommy
K: Mom, dad, and baby
C: Brother
Vieda: How about at Ohana? Are we family here, too?
Ka Yes. Ohana family is teachers and the kids.
We have learned how special each of us are. We may be different on the outside, but perhaps we can be the same on the inside (we haven’t talked about it in details yet!). We may not like the same color or food, but it does not matter! Because no matter what, we love each other!
We are happy to have a family at home and at school😊 For sure, there are a lot of wonderful things that we can discover about our families! We can’t wait to discuss about our families!
Love,
Flowers
