Photosynthesis
We are almost halfway through May and in June we have our Flowers Graduation. It’s hard to believe the year is almost over!
Nimo: What is Graduation?
K: It means thank you.
C: You do something, then go to another school.
A: We bye bye to Ohana.
L: I’m going to Nishimachi with my brother! My mommy can pick us both up, and I can walk by myself to the car.
In order to make our Graduation as special as we can, we began practicing our songs we plan to sing for our ceremony on June 8th. Our friends really liked our graduation songs that they wanted to sing it again and again! After we practiced our singing, we read the question of day, “Do you know what leaves do?”.
K: They talk to each other and drink water.
C: The leaves breath the oxygen and carbon dioxide come out. It helps the flower grow more higher.
V: They just stay still because they’re not alive.
Just like our human body, the plants have lots of parts that have important jobs. Even the hair on our heads are important:
L: If we don’t have hair, girls can’t tie their hair.
K: If you don’t have hair, then it’s just skin, then you need to wear a hat to protect from the sun.
C: If you don’t have hair you’ll die.
A: My dad has no hair, he’s bald, but he’s fine. He’s just bald.
Roots?
V: The roots grow under the ground so the flowers can stay still.
K: The roots help the flower grow.
K: Like the lungs pump the air.
V: The heart pumps blood.
K: The roots drink the water.
Stem?
A: Grow the flower up because when it rain the roots drink the water and it goes up the stem.
K: The stem holds the flower up. If there is no stem then the flower will just drop.
Flower?
A: To grow vegetable or fruit.
V: Bees come to drink the nectar.
K: The bees get the pollen.
Our word of the day today is, “Photosynthesis”. We were shocked to see such a long word! K quickly noticed the word “photo” and we sounded out the last half, “synthesis” together. “Photo” is another way to say light, and “synthesis” is another way to say, “put together”.
A: Photosynthesis happens in the leaves.
K: They are connecting things together. The roots connected so it gets bigger. The sun makes the plant grow, if there is no sun, the plant might die.
C: If there is no photosynthesis the flower will be dead. It puts the light on like the sun.
Our teachers explained to us that the plants use the water from the roots, carbon dioxide from people and animals, and the light from the sun to make food for the plant and oxygen for us!
Why are leaves green?
K: Because the flower also have green parts.
L: If the leaves grow yellow first, it will die then a green one will grow.
C: Leaves are not green, then nothing will be green.
A: if the leaves aren’t green they can’t breathe.
K: Because the sun is big.
R: Because it’s growing.
A: If it’s not green, the flower wont grow.
Our teachers asked us to take this mystery home and look it up for ourselves!
After our discussion we gathered around our plants and dug them out of their small cups. We lined up the plants and carefully examined the roots and leaves! We then re-planted our plants in a larger pot!
Stay dry everyone and we will see you all again tomorrow!
Love,
Flowers
