Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

It was pouring rain today that we didn’t get a chance to go out to the park to play. But that did not stop us from having fun in the classroom. Our day was filled with lots of fun things to do. For our morning activities, we had some card games and “what comes next?” puzzles on the table. We also played with people and blocks that we used to make towers. We made our own Earth day craft by marble painting using green, blue, and brown color, too!
We all had the same ideas that we were painting Earth. Why did we use green, blue, and brown paint?
Ak: I know the blue part is the ocean, the green part is the land, and the brown are the houses.
Ch: The blue one is the ocean, the green one is the land and the countries, the brown one is like tsunami because it goes with the blue one.
Me: It’s Earth!
Li: The blue one is the ocean, the green one is the leaves and countries.
Vi: The Earth has blue, green and brown.
A: Blue one is the ocean; green are the leaves.
U: The green things are the grass; blue thing is the water, and the brown are the soil.
K: The green one is the grass and the brown one is the dirt.
Ke: The blue part is the ocean, the green one is the land and the brown one is the leaves.
Ad: The green one is the countries; the blue is water.
K: The blue is the ocean; brown is Japan, and the green is America.
R and Ke: It’s Earth.

CIRCLE TIME

Reduce, reuse, recycle is very easy to do.
It simple to remember, recycle what we use.
Separate glass and paper
Separate Plastic and tin
And put them in their places.
In the recycle bin.

We all sat in a circle in a girl- boy pattern with our teachers. Big thanks to A and R for checking our girl-boy pattern sitting arrangement. We learned about the Earth day song which we plan to sing when we celebrate Earth Day. We are aware that we live on Earth, but took the chance today to reflect about how we can help to save our Earth.
Ka: To make the earth happy.
Li: To not make the Earth sad.
Ch: To save the Earth.
Ky: That’s Daddy’s cookie box.
Me: Mommy said the plastic is stinky, so we throw it away.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: Can we recycle plastic and paper?
Ke: We can wash it and use it again like the plastic bottles we can put something on it.
Me: I want to change because I didn’t know that you can wash them.
U You can use it for plants cut it and put some soil and seeds on it.
Ad: I change my mind after what Ke said. like the glass you can wash it and put something in.
A: We can wash again so it’s clean.
V: We can recycle newspaper; we can wash plastic and use them to make art.
Ak: We can wash the plastic and the straw keep it and use it again.
Ch: If we don’t need it anymore, so we fold it, and recycle it and put it in the garbage bin.
K: If it’s a paper you can make a heart.
Ke: If you have a small paper and you need a big one, you can burn the small one when the paper gets on fire it gets bigger.
Ky: We can make sakura and dinosaurs with newspaper.
Li: We can make art with it.
Me: What is Earth Day?
Ch: We do something for Earth.

We know several ways we can recycle things around us. How about celebrating Earth Day in class? What can we do to celebrate it?

Ke: We can pop a lot of pop crackers. We can use toilet paper roll and use balloons to make the pop cracker.
K and R: Cracker!
Lily: Make an Earth and put it on the wall.
Ch: I want to make the earth with this *paper plate.
Ak: We can put paint inside the cup and make instruments. We can decorate the wall, we can put the painting we did today on the wall.

We read the story about Big Earth, Little Me by Thom Wiley, Illustrated by Kate Endle

As we listened to the story, we discovered that there are lots of things we can do to help save our Earth. “By cleaning our own yard”, Ak made a comment when he saw the picture. We also learned about a sign that means recycle. Ke said, “That sign means check and garbage”. A said he thought it meant “recycle”. Ch added, “We should turn off the water while we brush our teeth, so we don’t waste the water”. On the other hand, Me shared that “When my sister’s cousin came to our house, they draw on both side of the paper to save the paper.” Amazing!
Just before lunch time, our teachers took the junk art box from the cupboard. We were all thrilled to see what was inside. Li suggested to make Earth out of newspaper to put on the wall. Some of us made something that looked like snowflakes, cotton candy, dinosaurs, and musical instruments like ukulele and shakers out of toilet rolls, straws, yogurt container, newspapers, and a lot more things.
What a fun way to learn the concept of reduce, reuse, and recycle!
Here is hoping that tomorrow will be a sunny day so we could enjoy park time again! See you all tomorrow!

Love,
Flowers Class
