America Day!

A heartfelt gratitude to S (C’s mom) and L, C, and M for planning, organizing and preparing a wonderful presentation about the United States of America! But first, let’s go through the other activities that we had  during Free Play period.

Straight Linear Artwork

Discovering the many images/models/shapes that can be created by putting together lines in different angles has been a fuel that lights up our  bulb of ideas the past few days.

Using the leftover strips of beautiful Japanese designed paper from last week’s Hinamatsuri’s celebration, we pasted these strips onto  a large sheet of blank paper with tracing lines. The task was to stick the strips following the straight tracing lines. When all tracing lines were covered, some of us created more lines by using a long ruler to draw. Of course, this activity involved a lot of social interactions such as sharing, taking turns, asking for permission and “negotiating”.

Folding Paper with John

Another way to create lines is by folding! Inspired by the Hanamatsuri fan, we folded long sheets of paper and were amazed at the creases that it created. Through this activity, we got to work on our eye hand coordination as we had to be visually aware of how we folded the paper. And of course, the final product of folding the paper into a fan brought about funny moments as we used it  to make our hair “fly away”.

Building Towers with Shelley

Wooden blocks is a wonderful medium that always inspire us to use and enhance our imagination. Together with Shelley, we were able to make a “slanting” tower  which made us excited and nervous at the same time as we slowly placed a block on to of another as it can “collapse” any time. Aside from building, we also learned how to politely ask others to not knock down the tower that we had just built.

CIRCLE TIME

Whenever we see the projector set up, we  somehow know that we have a special guests coming to virtually visit us. This morning, we were first quite confused as to who was the little guy wearing cool American sunglasses…. He looked and sounded familiar but we couldn’t quite figure out who he was. When we took off his sunglasses, it was M! We all pointed and waved to him on the screen.

L (M’s mom) shared to us some facts about the American flag and we were surprised to hear that there were more than 10 stars on it! That number is a whole lot more than our ten little fingers! Together with S, we made our own American flag by adding the colors red and blue using crayons, peeled and stuck star stickers. It was really fun to wave the flags that we made along with the special song that was played.

We went out to the park and had a nice game of “soccer”
