Shadows and Shadow Puppet Show
Rainy Monday could have kept us inside our room, but it did not make our day less fun! We had some special activities lined up for us that kept us busy and made our day fabulous.
Have you ever wondered if animals have the same number of teeth as we do? Ch told us that children have 20 teeth. We looked at some animals and were so amazed at the number of teeth they have! Dolphin has 250, crocodile has 80 and even snail has over 10,000 teeth on its tongue. It is quite surprising to learn that although animals have more teeth than us, scientists believe that most animals do not need to brush their teeth. How is that possible?
A: We need to brush our teeth because if you don’t brush, it make you sick.
Ch: Mushiba, the germs will come and will take off your teeth.
Ak: If you don’t brush your teeth, you’ll get sick. The germs come to your teeth and get like taking something that is a teeth. If you brush your teeth, no baikinman not coming to your mouth.
How about the animals? How come they do not have to brush their teeth? Y raised her hand and shared her idea. She said, “Because animals eat it, it get cleans with the food” which is absolutely correct! Also, scientists found out that most animals do not eat food with sugar, so they do not need to brush their teeth. Do we know which foods have sugar in them? Yes, we do!
K: Gummy bear L: Lollipop
A: Cupcake Ch: Juice
K: Chocolate A: Doughnuts
K: Maple syrup and honey R: Cupcake
K: Pancakes M: Doughnuts
T: Ice cream Y and K: Ice cream and cake
L and A: Marshmallows
It seemed like A realized that monkeys eat banana and rabbits eat carrots. He said, “Yes, animals don’t eat sweet things!”.
QUESTION OF THE DAY: Have seen shadows?
Thank you, Li for reading today’s question of the day. Thank you, Ke for counting our friends who were here today. We got so excited when we heard the word, “shadows”. We had so much to share about shadows.
Me: You look at the shadow.
Ch: Shadow is something when lights come out. If you go out, the sun shines on you. There is something black that’s a shadow.
A: If you find a sun, you stand like this. It copy like this. It’s a shadow. It copy me.
K: Shadow is moving. Black.
A: Like when lights are on, we can see a shadow. When light is off, then we cannot see. When you move your body, the shadow also move.
A: Shadow is a little bit bigger than you.
M: My shadow is magic because it can copy me!
Ch: The size is same as your body.
A: (saw his shadow on the floor) Oh my shadow is bigger than my feet!
A: Yes, I can see my shadow is a bit bigger than me. No one can run out of the shadow!
Ke: If you are in a place, if there is a black people and you are inside that means it is your shadow!
We all jumped off our feet and moved around the room. We could see a bit of leg shadow. Some of us tried to move from one side of the room to the another, and boom, our shadows moved, too!
EXPLORING SHADOWS
Today was our first day of learning about shadows. Our teachers were so impressed at how much we know about our shadows. We know that it can copy us but it’s black. We know when we could see our shadows. On the other hand, we are not quite sure whether our shadows are bigger than us or not. We plan to explore more about our shadows during our park time. We cannot wait to check out our shadow size and how it looks like!
While our shadow activity outside was put on hold due to the rainy weather, we had a shadow matching activity. Each of us had either a picture card or a shadow card. At the go signal, we had to look for our card that matches our card. Yay to our friends who were so quick at finding their match!
SHADOW PUPPET SHOW
Talking about shadow, how lovely it was to get to see a shadow puppet show by our friends and teachers! Not only that, but it was also so wonderful to try to be a shadow puppeteer! We held the sticks to move the puppets and made them “talk” as if they were in a show! M, Ri, A and Ki did such a fantastic job as puppeteers!
Perhaps it would be a great idea to make our own puppets and use them for our very own shadow puppet show! As we are learning around the theme of “how we express ourselves”, we find so much enjoyment in being able to express our ideas and feelings through shadow puppets. We would like to extend this wonderful learning experience to making our own shadow puppet show!
SILHOUETTES
What happens if we would only see our friends’ silhouette? Would we be able to recognize them?
Let us find out in our Guess Whose Silhouette? Game. Vieda held out one silhouette and asked us to guess whose it was. We carefully looked at the hairstyle, the edges for the face parts and head. Our teachers joined the game, too! We cheered so much when we guessed it correctly! Way to go! There were silhouettes that we thought belonged to someone else. For example, when A’s silhouette was put up, some of us thought it could either be A or K. However, A confidently said, “No, I think that is me because it really looks like me. Look at the head! That is my head!”. On the other hand, when K’s was up, everybody was so sure that it was Ch except for A. A said, “That is Ke!”! When asked how she knew it was Ke, she replied, “Because I know that is K’s face!”.
MORNING ACTIVITIES
We had our silhouette on a white paper as well. We were so excited as we drew things that we like on it. K was so eager to draw all the foods that he likes! He immediately drew cake, oranges, chicken sandwich and dinosaurs. A lot of us drew our best friends, too because we like them very much! Y even said, “Oh I forgot to draw the best people that I like! My Mommy! I am going to draw her picture, too!” Aww, so sweet!
We had so much fun learning about shadows, animals’ teeth and spending great time playing with our friends!
See you all again tomorrow!
Lots of love,
Flowers Class
