Picasso or Pigasso?

It’s another marvelous Monday for Flowers!  After doing our morning jobs, we sat in a circle and sang a special birthday song for Me who turned 5 years old today. She had been so excited for her birthday to come! Happy birthday, Me! Some of our friends had some questions for our birthday celebrant:

Ch: Why do you like pink?

Me: Uhhhh… I actually like orange.

Ch: Why do you like orange?

Me: Because my sister likes orange.

Ch: Why did you copy your sister?

Me: I didn’t. I just like orange and my sister likes orange and pink.

            Ri: Do you like red?
            Me: No!

Aki: What does your baby (sister) eat?

Me: I don’t have a baby. I eat apple soup.

Happy birthday again, Me!

As we were getting ready to head out to the park, Vieda asked those who are 5 years old to change their shoes. Then Yu giggled as she said, “Wow, there are 5 children in Flowers who are 5 years old”. And all of us laughed, too😊

 CIRCLE TIME:

Last Friday, Nimo talked about an artist named Picasso. Guess what? We all remember his name. We sounded out his name and tried writing it on the board as well! A wrote /P/, Ch /i/, Ti /k/, Me /a/, Li /s/, A/s/ and Yu /o/ which spells PIKASSO. Great job, everyone!

Vieda showed us some of Picasso’s paintings. Looking at them carefully, Ka felt that “It’s scary!”, while Ti thinks that “One looks like a monkey and the other one looks like a squiddy fish!”. We can all agree that Picasso’s paintings are all colorful. We also noticed that his paintings looked like there is only face or figure at first, but then as you look closely at them, it seems like the figure becomes two! Creativity at its best!

We got so thrilled when Vieda showed us a picture of Picasso. We looked at his picture and Ak mentioned, “Oh Picasso looks like a Grandpa!”. Then Ad looked puzzled and said, “But that does not look like a pig. Can I see his real picture?”. Our teachers seemed a bit confused as well until Vieda remembered reading us a story about PIGASSO and MOOTISSE in Phonics class. We all had a good laugh! After we cleared that Pigasso is a pig artist in a storybook while PICASSO is the human artist, we all laughed!!!

We learned that Picasso said something awesome. He said, “Every child is an artist.” We tried to recall what an artist is like. We know that an artist is someone who draws, paints, and makes things. Oh no, we all answered NO on our question of the day! We did not quickly realize that we are ALL artists because we can draw, paint, and build things! Yu immediately said, “Sorry I changed my mind. I will answer YES for our question of the day!”. At the end of our circle time, we all “changed” our mind and said YES to our question of the day! We are all indeed artists, as Picasso said.

 OUR ARTISTIC CREATIONS

Our day in Flowers won’t end without fulfilling the artistic side of us. We put the ends of strips of paper to make them into circles. Then, we glued them on our artwork on all about circles. We just love looking at all the circles in this project! On another activity, Ke, Ka, Yu and L were so engrossed as they tried doing scratch art. Ka thinks scratch art is like a magic because colorful pictures come out by just scratching the black paper!

Just as we love our project on circles, we got so excited when Vieda told us that this time, we would be doing a group craft using only squares! When we saw the box that we would be working on for this craft, we got a clue what the project would be. It’s something that looks like Elmer the Elephant!

            Vieda: What makes Elmer special?

L: Because he wants to change to a gray elephant.

Ch: Because he has so many colors.

Ka: Because he has rainbow colors.

Ti: I went to the zoo and saw a rainbow elephant!

Ad: I can make my one!

We decided that we would all help each other to make our elephant project. But it would be great if we could call it with a special name.

   Ka: Let’s call it Lucky.

            Me: Cherry!

Ch: Why don’t we call it Transpiration. I don’t know what it means.

            Ti: How about butterfly?

Vieda: Wow, there are a lot of friends who want to name our elephant Transpiration. I wonder why.

Ak: Because we want other names.

            Ch: Because Transpiration means cool.

            Ad: It’s cool.

            Ke: it’s a good name.

We were all good on calling our elephant project, TRANSPIRATION! We all got excited as we got our hands busy gluing square fabrics and papers on the box. Ka was so keen at reminding us, “Let’s cover the box so people don’t know it’s Amazon box!”.

Some parts are still missing to make Transpiration look like an elephant.

            Li: We need feet!

            Ka: We need ears.

Ch: We need to make its trunk.

            Ti: We need the eyes!
           K: And eyeballs!

Each day, we get inspired by different artists such as Keith Haring and Pablo Picasso as we create our own artworks and become artists as well! We also get inspired when we see our friends work on their artworks. Picasso is absolutely correct when he said, “Every child is an artist!”.

 Love,

Flowers XOXO
